Ibiza has welcomed two new ambassadors who represent two increasingly important sides of the island's international luxury offering: hospitality and gastronomy.
Abel Matutes Prats, president of Palladium Hotel Group, and three-Michelin-starred chef Dabiz Muñoz have been officially named ambassadors of Ibiza Luxury Destination, the premium tourism club of Fomento del Turismo de Ibiza. The appointments were announced during the organisation's 16th Annual Gala at BLESS Ibiza The Site on August 19.
Two Figures Representing Ibiza's Luxury Evolution
Matutes Prats was recognised for his business career and his role in the development of Ibiza's tourism sector. As president of Palladium Hotel Group and vice president of the Matutes Group, he represents one of the island's most influential hospitality businesses.
Muñoz brings a very different but increasingly significant element to Ibiza's luxury proposition: gastronomy.
The chef behind Madrid's three-Michelin-starred DiverXO has opened StreetXO Ibiza this summer, marking his first major restaurant project on the island. The restaurant forms part of The Site Ibiza in Platja d'en Bossa and opened on June 1.
A New Image of Luxury
The appointments come at a time when Ibiza is actively expanding its definition of luxury.
According to Ibiza Luxury Destination president Nuria Moreno, today's luxury tourism is increasingly centred on personalised service and experiences rather than simply spending power.
That evolution can be seen across the island, where high-end hotels, gastronomy, wellness, yachting, art and exclusive experiences are increasingly being combined with Ibiza's traditional cultural identity.
For Matutes Prats, the transformation has also been significant from an investment perspective. Speaking around his appointment, he noted that two decades ago investors were reluctant to put money into Ibiza because they did not see sufficient returns, while the island has since moved towards a model focused more strongly on quality than quantity.
Dabiz Muñoz Strengthens Ibiza's Gastronomic Profile
Muñoz's arrival is particularly notable for Ibiza's food scene.
StreetXO is his first project on the island, bringing the chef's internationally recognised, creative approach to a destination that has increasingly positioned gastronomy alongside nightlife and hospitality as part of its luxury appeal.
At the opening of StreetXO Ibiza, more than 200 guests from the social and business worlds attended the event, underlining the attention surrounding the project.
Muñoz has also described the Ibiza project as something the team had wanted to pursue for years, saying that they had been waiting for the right moment and the right partner.
Six New Members Join Ibiza Luxury Destination
The gala also introduced six new members to Ibiza Luxury Destination:
- BLESS Ibiza The Site
- Boating Ibiza
- Island Casino Events
- Nômade Temple Ibiza
- NH Collection Ibiza
- Ibiza Gallery
The additions cover several areas of the island's premium tourism economy, including hospitality, boating, entertainment, wellness, gastronomy and art.
The event therefore served as more than an awards ceremony. It highlighted the increasingly interconnected network of businesses helping shape Ibiza's luxury tourism proposition.
Ibiza Wants Luxury Without Losing Its Identity
Perhaps the most interesting message from the gala is that Ibiza Luxury Destination is not presenting luxury as an attempt to imitate other international destinations.
Instead, the organisation is emphasising what makes Ibiza distinctive: its landscape, light, sea, gastronomy, culture, traditions and the experiences that cannot easily be replicated elsewhere.
That distinction is increasingly important as Ibiza attracts more international investment and luxury brands.
The challenge for the island is not simply to become more luxurious. It is to develop a high-value tourism model while maintaining the character that made Ibiza internationally desirable in the first place.
With Abel Matutes Prats representing the island's hospitality and business community and Dabiz Muñoz bringing further international attention to its gastronomy, their appointments reflect an Ibiza that is becoming more sophisticated while continuing to build its own definition of luxury.
