What if your next flight to Ibiza was powered by electricity?
The idea may sound futuristic, but Barcelona–Ibiza is being identified as one of the potential routes that could eventually be served by electric aircraft as Spain and the wider European aviation industry work towards lower-emission short-haul flying.
There is one important catch: there is no electric Barcelona–Ibiza passenger service yet, and no airline has announced that the route will become electric. Instead, the connection is being highlighted as a possible future market as the technology develops.
Why Ibiza Could Be Interesting for Electric Aviation
Barcelona and Ibiza are already connected by frequent flights, with the journey taking roughly an hour.
The direct distance is approximately 277 kilometres, making it a relatively short flight compared with many conventional air routes.
That makes the route interesting from an aviation perspective.
Electric aircraft are expected to be particularly useful for short regional journeys, where smaller planes could potentially replace conventional aircraft and significantly reduce emissions and noise.
European aviation researchers and companies are already examining routes of up to around 500 kilometres as possible candidates for future electric aircraft. Barcelona–Ibiza is specifically among the routes identified as having potential.
But Don't Expect Electric Planes to Ibiza Just Yet
The technology still has some major hurdles to overcome.
One of the biggest is the weight of batteries.
Unlike conventional aviation fuel, batteries remain extremely heavy, and adding more battery capacity also adds weight to the aircraft. That creates a difficult balance between range, passenger capacity and payload.
Current fully electric aircraft concepts are generally aimed at much shorter journeys, with some projects initially targeting flights of around 100–150 kilometres and aircraft carrying fewer than 20 passengers.
Barcelona–Ibiza is considerably longer than that.
This means a fully electric version of the route would likely require significant improvements in battery technology and aircraft efficiency.
Hybrid Aircraft Could Arrive First
One possible solution is hybrid-electric propulsion.
Instead of relying entirely on batteries, hybrid aircraft combine electric motors with another energy source, potentially allowing them to travel considerably farther while still using electric propulsion for part of the flight.
For island routes such as Barcelona–Ibiza, this could eventually prove particularly useful.
The route crosses the Mediterranean, meaning there is no realistic rail alternative — unlike some short mainland Spanish journeys where high-speed trains already provide an alternative to flying.
That makes cleaner aviation technology particularly relevant for island connections.
Spain Is Already Testing the Technology
Electric aviation is no longer purely theoretical.
Projects in Spain are moving into the testing phase, with engineers working on electric propulsion systems, batteries and conversions of existing small aircraft.
Some projects are taking an interesting approach: rather than designing an entirely new aircraft, engineers can convert existing small planes by replacing conventional propulsion systems with electric motors and batteries.
Experimental flights have also received authorisation in Spain, although commercial passenger operations still require extensive testing, certification and regulatory approval.
What Would an Electric Ibiza Flight Look Like?
The first electric passenger aircraft are expected to be much smaller than the Airbus and Boeing aircraft currently flying to Ibiza.
Instead of hundreds of passengers, early electric aircraft could carry fewer than 20 people.
That means the first electric services would probably look very different from today's mass-market flights.
Rather than replacing an entire Vueling or Ryanair service overnight, electric aviation could initially serve smaller regional markets with lower passenger numbers.
Over time, improvements in batteries and propulsion systems could allow aircraft to become larger and travel farther.
Ibiza Could Be Part of a Much Bigger Change
Barcelona–Ibiza isn't the only potential European electric route.
Other island and short-haul connections being discussed include Athens–Santorini, Nice–Corsica and Rome–Sardinia, alongside several mainland European routes.
The appeal is obvious: many of these journeys are too long or geographically difficult to replace with trains, yet short enough to potentially become viable for next-generation aircraft.
For Spain, with its combination of mainland cities and island destinations, that could make electric aviation particularly interesting.
Could This Change How We Fly to Ibiza?
If battery technology develops quickly enough, the Barcelona–Ibiza route could eventually become an interesting test case for cleaner regional aviation.
But there is still a considerable distance between “potential route” and “bookable flight.”
Aircraft must demonstrate sufficient range and reliability, batteries must become lighter and more energy-dense, charging infrastructure must be developed at airports, and aviation authorities must certify the new aircraft and propulsion systems.
So for now, your Barcelona–Ibiza flight will still be powered by conventional aviation technology.
But the fact that Ibiza is already being discussed as a potential destination for electric aircraft gives us an intriguing glimpse of what flying to the island could look like in the future.
One day, Barcelona to Ibiza could be an electric flight. The technology just isn't ready yet.
