Yann Pissenem: from cleaning toilets to building Ibiza’s nightlife empire
Before he became the man behind Ushuaïa Ibiza, Hï Ibiza and [UNVRS], Yann Pissenem was a young Frenchman in Barcelona looking for work — and willing to do whatever it took to get started.
His story is one of the more remarkable journeys in Ibiza’s modern nightlife industry: from collecting glasses and cleaning toilets to building one of the island’s most powerful entertainment operations.
Today, Pissenem is the owner, founder and CEO of The Night League and Ushuaïa Entertainment, with Ushuaïa Ibiza, Hï Ibiza and [UNVRS] among the major names under his operation. His own Instagram bio also identifies him as owner, founder and CEO of these brands.
And in 2026, his latest project is sitting at the very top of the global club industry.
[UNVRS] has been named the world’s No. 1 club by DJ Mag for a second consecutive year, despite opening only in 2025.
But Pissenem’s journey to that position started a long way from Ibiza’s VIP tables.
From law school to nightlife
Pissenem was born in the French village of Azelot, in the Lorraine region of northeastern France.
He initially studied law before moving to Barcelona in 1994 to study tourism.
Once there, he began looking for work in the city’s nightlife industry. According to profiles of his early career, he started at the bottom, working as a busboy and cleaning toilets before progressing into other roles.
He had already developed an interest in nightlife and music, and his ambition quickly became apparent.
Rather than simply working in venues, Pissenem began learning how every part of the business operated — from service and staffing to music, customers and management.
He eventually became a bar manager and began building his own businesses.
It was the beginning of a career that would eventually take him to Ibiza.
The move to Ibiza
In 2008, Pissenem moved from mainland Spain to Ibiza.
His initial idea was relatively modest: he wanted to operate a beach bar, serve juices and play chill-out music.
But he quickly recognised that there was an opportunity to create something different.
Instead of focusing solely on the young, all-night clubbing audience that had traditionally defined much of Ibiza’s nightlife, Pissenem saw potential in combining music with a more sophisticated daytime experience.
That idea became Ushuaïa.
The concept would eventually grow from a beach club into one of Ibiza’s most recognisable entertainment brands, combining electronic music, major artists, spectacular productions, hospitality and luxury VIP experiences.
The difficult years behind the luxury
The story of Ushuaïa’s rise was far from glamorous in the beginning.
Pissenem has recalled periods when the business was struggling and he had to live extremely simply while reinvesting money into the operation.
In the 2024 El Mundo profile that brought renewed attention to his story, he recalled sleeping inside the venue for months with his dog while rebuilding the business.
He also described surviving on discarded yoghurts found in supermarket bins.
It is a striking contrast to the world associated with Ushuaïa today — where international DJs perform for thousands of people and premium VIP experiences can cost thousands of euros.
But the difficult period also demonstrated the mentality that would become central to Pissenem’s career: reinvestment, control and relentless work.
From Ushuaïa to Hï Ibiza
Ushuaïa became the foundation of a much larger nightlife operation.
In 2017, Pissenem and his team opened Hï Ibiza on the former Space Ibiza site.
The club introduced a new generation of large-scale Ibiza nightlife, built around multiple rooms, advanced production and a constantly changing programme of international electronic music.
Hï went on to become one of the most successful clubs in the world, topping DJ Mag’s Top 100 Clubs poll for four consecutive years between 2022 and 2025.
Pissenem’s approach was becoming clear: Ibiza nightlife could be treated not simply as a club night, but as a complete entertainment experience.
Then came [UNVRS]
The next chapter was even more ambitious.
In 2024, The Night League announced plans to transform the former Privilege site into [UNVRS], pronounced “Universe”.
The project was described as the world’s first “hyperclub” — a venue designed to combine the production capabilities of an arena with the intimacy and hospitality of a nightclub.
[UNVRS] eventually opened on May 30, 2025, with a 4,000-person capacity.
Its launch was accompanied by one of Ibiza’s most memorable recent marketing campaigns.
A mysterious UFO appeared over Es Vedrà, generating huge speculation online before the campaign was revealed to be connected to [UNVRS].
Hollywood actor Will Smith became part of the campaign, helping turn the mysterious sighting into a global talking point.
The strategy was typical of Pissenem’s approach: the club itself was only part of the story. The launch had to become an experience before the doors even opened.
Two years, two No. 1 rankings
The results have been remarkable.
In its first year of operation, [UNVRS] entered DJ Mag’s Top 100 Clubs ranking at No. 1 — a historic achievement for a newly opened venue.
In 2026, it retained the No. 1 position. DJ Mag describes [UNVRS] as having “shot straight to the top” after opening in 2025.
Pissenem now sits behind the three venues occupying an extraordinary position in Ibiza’s global club hierarchy.
DJ Mag’s 2026 ranking placed [UNVRS] at No. 1, Hï Ibiza at No. 2 and Ushuaïa Ibiza at No. 4.
That means three of the world’s highest-ranked clubs are connected to the same Ibiza-based nightlife operation.
The €200 million figure
Pissenem’s business has grown enormously.
A 2024 El Mundo profile reported that his operation had almost 1,000 employees and more than €200 million in annual turnover. The same figure was subsequently reported by La Voz de Ibiza.
Those figures should be understood as figures reported at the time, rather than presented as confirmed 2026 financial results.
More recent reporting continues to underline the scale of the operation, with Vanity Fair describing Pissenem as overseeing an empire generating close to €200 million per season.
The Night League’s current profile also says its events attract more than two million visitors annually.
A very different kind of nightlife boss
Despite building an empire around some of the world’s biggest parties, Pissenem has described himself as unusually disciplined for someone working in the nightlife industry.
He has spoken about not drinking alcohol or taking drugs and maintaining a strict routine around exercise, nutrition and recovery.
His background in martial arts has remained an important part of his lifestyle, and his work ethic has become almost as much a part of his public image as his clubs.
During Ibiza’s season, his schedule has historically involved moving between venues, meetings and events with very little sleep.
It is a lifestyle that would be difficult to sustain without an extraordinary level of discipline.
“I’m not a doctor”
Perhaps the most revealing explanation of why Pissenem remains so committed to nightlife came during his conversation with El Mundo.
Explaining why he chose the industry, he essentially described his role as creating temporary happiness.
He said that although he was not a doctor, for five, six or eight hours he could have thousands of people dancing, smiling and forgetting their problems.
That idea goes a long way towards explaining the philosophy behind his venues.
For Pissenem, nightlife isn't simply about selling drinks or tickets.
It is about creating an environment where people can escape their everyday lives for a few hours.
From cleaning toilets to shaping Ibiza
Pissenem’s rise is ultimately a story about how dramatically Ibiza’s nightlife industry has evolved.
He arrived on the island with an idea for a beach bar.
That idea became Ushuaïa.
Ushuaïa was followed by Hï Ibiza.
And then came [UNVRS], a project ambitious enough to create an entirely new category of club.
Today, [UNVRS] is the world’s No. 1 club according to DJ Mag for a second consecutive year, while Hï Ibiza and Ushuaïa also remain among the highest-ranked clubs on the planet.
The journey from cleaning toilets in Barcelona to controlling three of Ibiza’s most internationally recognised nightlife brands is difficult to overstate.
What began with a young Frenchman looking for work has become one of the defining business stories of modern Ibiza.
And in 2026, Yann Pissenem is still building.
