Ibiza and Formentera are set to strengthen their environmental protection teams with six new Environmental Agents, increasing the number of officers working across the two islands from 12 to 18.
According to Diario de Ibiza, this will be the first increase in the local Environmental Agents workforce since 2018, marking a significant reinforcement after several years without additional permanent positions.
Six New Agents for the Islands
The six new positions will bring the combined Environmental Agents service in Ibiza and Formentera to 18 officers.
Environmental Agents, known in Spain as Agentes de Medio Ambiente, are responsible for protecting natural areas and enforcing environmental regulations. Their work can include monitoring protected areas, investigating environmental offences, supporting conservation efforts and responding to incidents affecting the islands' natural environment.
The increase is particularly relevant during the summer months, when Ibiza and Formentera experience a major rise in population and visitor activity.
First Increase Since 2018
The new appointments are notable because the number of Environmental Agents assigned to Ibiza and Formentera has remained at 12 since 2018.
The reinforcement therefore represents a 50% increase in the local workforce, bringing six additional officers to the islands.
For an area that receives millions of visitors and contains protected coastal, marine and rural environments, having additional personnel available for environmental monitoring is particularly significant.
Protecting Ibiza and Formentera
The Environmental Agents play an important role in protecting the Balearic Islands' natural heritage.
