Ibiza is set to gain its first-ever nonstop air connection with the United States, with United Airlines announcing a new seasonal route between Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey and Ibiza Airport starting in May 2027.
The new connection is being welcomed as an important step for Ibiza's international connectivity, giving travellers from the New York area a direct route to the island without having to connect through another European airport.
Flights Begin in May 2027
United will begin operating the new route on May 31, 2027, with four flights per week between Newark and Ibiza. The service is scheduled to operate during the summer season.
The flights will be operated using United's new Airbus A321XLR, a long-range aircraft designed to make nonstop transatlantic routes to destinations such as Ibiza possible with a single-aisle aircraft.
The planned schedule will operate on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, according to Ibiza Spotlight, with services currently scheduled through early October.
A First for Ibiza and the US Market
While Ibiza already has extensive connections with major European cities, the island has never previously had a scheduled nonstop route to the United States.
That changes in 2027, with United becoming the only US airline offering a nonstop connection between the United States and Ibiza. Ibiza is one of eight new destinations in United's 2027 expansion where the airline says no other US carrier currently provides nonstop service.
For travellers from the New York region, the new route will remove the need for a European connection when travelling directly to Ibiza.
Part of United's Biggest International Expansion
The Ibiza service is part of United Airlines' largest international network expansion in its history.
The airline is adding 10 new international destinations across Europe and Asia for 2027, including Ibiza, Valencia, Marseille, Luxembourg City, Ljubljana, Terceira, Olbia, Catania, Toulouse and Okinawa.
Several of the new European routes will be operated with the A321XLR, allowing United to serve destinations that may not generate enough demand for larger wide-body aircraft.
A New Connection to the American Market
The new route is particularly significant for Ibiza's tourism sector.
The island has been working to strengthen its connections with the US market, which is increasingly important for its luxury hotels, restaurants, wellness experiences, cultural attractions and nightlife.
Fomento de Turismo de Ibiza has welcomed the announcement, describing the route as an opportunity to consolidate the island's North American market and strengthen Ibiza's position as an international destination.
The connection could also make Ibiza more accessible to American travellers who want to experience different sides of the island beyond its famous nightlife.
The A321XLR Experience
United's new A321XLR aircraft will also bring the airline's latest international cabin to the route.
The aircraft will feature 20 United Polaris suites, 12 United Premium Plus seats and Economy Plus, alongside features including 4K screens, Bluetooth connectivity and Starlink Wi-Fi for eligible MileagePlus members.
This gives passengers travelling from the New York area a direct option to Ibiza while also introducing a new long-haul aircraft to the island's airport.
What It Means for Ibiza
The new route represents more than simply another flight on the island's summer schedule.
For Ibiza, it creates a direct gateway to the United States for the first time, potentially making the island easier to reach for American visitors while also giving Ibiza residents a more convenient route to New York.
The announcement also reflects the island's growing international appeal and the continued interest in connecting Ibiza directly with long-haul markets.
With the first flights scheduled for May 31, 2027, Ibiza will enter next summer with a new connection that could become an important part of its international tourism network.
