A Jet2 flight travelling from London Stansted to Ibiza was diverted to Paris on Sunday after the crew declared a general emergency while the aircraft was cruising at 35,000 feet over northern France.
Flight LS1473 departed Stansted at around 8:10 a.m. on August 30 and was approximately an hour into its journey when the pilots transmitted the internationally recognised 7700 emergency code. The aircraft then made an abrupt 180-degree turn towards Paris.
Emergency Landing in Paris
Air traffic controllers gave the aircraft priority to land at Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport, with emergency services placed on standby.
The aircraft, a Boeing 737-800 registered G-JZHF, landed safely on runway 27L shortly before 11 a.m. local time.
There were no reports of injuries in the sources reviewed.
The cause of the emergency has not been confirmed. Jet2 had not publicly disclosed what prompted the crew to declare the emergency at the time of reporting.
Flight Later Continued Towards Ibiza
The incident did not ultimately end the journey to Ibiza.
According to the latest reports, the aircraft later resumed its flight from Paris to Ibiza, with the service continuing after the emergency diversion.
The incident therefore resulted in an unexpected detour for passengers travelling to the island, but the aircraft was able to continue its journey after landing safely in Paris.
What Does Squawk 7700 Mean?
The 7700 transponder code is used by pilots to alert air traffic control that an aircraft is experiencing a general emergency.
Importantly, the code itself does not identify the nature or severity of the problem. It allows air traffic controllers to prioritise the aircraft and prepare emergency services if required.
That means the reason for the diversion should not be assumed until Jet2 or the relevant authorities provide further information.
A Disrupted Journey to Ibiza
For passengers on board LS1473, what began as a routine Sunday morning flight from the UK to Ibiza turned into an unexpected stop in Paris.
The aircraft was ultimately able to continue towards Ibiza, but the incident highlights the procedures airlines and air traffic controllers have in place when an aircraft reports an emergency during a flight.
