A beautiful evening of live music is coming to northern Ibiza as Sant Miquel de Balansat prepares to host a free recital of opera and zarzuela featuring three musicians closely connected to the island.
The concert will bring together soprano Celia Toledo, Ibiza-born tenor Carlos Tur and Ibizan pianist Elvira Ramón for a programme spanning some of the most recognisable works of the operatic and Spanish lyrical traditions.
The recital takes place on Saturday, September 12 at 8:30pm inside the historic church of Sant Miquel de Balansat, with free admission until capacity is reached.
A Night of Opera and Zarzuela
The evening will be divided into two parts.
The first will focus on opera, with Giuseppe Verdi taking centre stage. The programme includes pieces from Rigoletto, including Questa o quella and È il sol dell’anima, as well as the famous duet Parigi, o cara from La Traviata.
The operatic programme will also feature Pourquoi me réveiller from Jules Massenet's Werther and Meco all'altar di Venere from Vincenzo Bellini's Norma, alongside solo performances by Celia Toledo.
After the interval, the recital will turn to zarzuela, celebrating one of Spain's most distinctive forms of musical theatre.
The second half will include selections such as En un país de fábula, the duet from El dúo de La Africana, No puede ser from La tabernera del puerto, Madre de mis amores from Monte Carmelo and Torero quiero ser.
Three Musicians With Ibiza Connections
One of the most special aspects of the evening is the connection all three performers have with Ibiza.
Celia Toledo
Soprano Celia Toledo is a graduate of the Professional Conservatory and is continuing her vocal training in Madrid.
She has already participated in several initiatives connected with the island's lyrical music scene while continuing to develop her career as a singer.
Carlos Tur
The evening will also feature Ibiza-born tenor Carlos Tur, who was born in 1996 and began his musical training at the age of nine.
His later studies took him into the world of lyrical singing, including training with several specialists and further studies in Milan with repertorist Jiang Wei.
Tur has performed in Ibiza, Mallorca and Italy, appearing at venues including Can Ventosa, the Auditori de Cas Serres and Ibiza Cathedral, as well as stages in Milan and Piacenza.
His repertoire ranges from Mozart and Baroque opera to bel canto, Verdi, Puccini, zarzuela and Neapolitan song.
Elvira Ramón
At the piano will be Ibizan pianist Elvira Ramón Riera, a senior piano graduate of the Conservatori Superior del Liceu.
Ramón has an extensive career as both a performer and accompanist and has received first and third prizes in different editions of the Ibiza International Piano Competition.
She has worked with numerous singers and participated in lyrical projects, festivals and opera productions, as well as developing a long teaching career in Ibiza's educational and musical institutions.
Tur and Ramón have also collaborated extensively on recitals dedicated to lyrical repertoire.
A Special Setting in Sant Miquel
The choice of venue adds another layer to the evening.
The church of Sant Miquel de Balansat, one of the island's most recognisable traditional churches, will provide the setting for the recital.
Rather than a large concert hall or modern venue, the audience will experience the voices and piano in one of Ibiza's historic spaces.
The event is organised by the Ajuntament de Sant Joan de Labritja and forms part of the municipality's cultural programming.
