Summer 2026 is officially coming to an end with a record that is hard to ignore: according to Spain’s State Meteorological Agency (AEMET), the meteorological summer from June 1 to August 31 is set to become the hottest summer ever recorded in Spain.
The national average temperature is expected to finish around 2.5°C above the 1991–2020 reference average, surpassing the previous record set in 2025.
For Ibiza, where summer temperatures are a major part of the island’s appeal, the extraordinary heat has been one of the defining features of the 2026 season.
The Hottest Summer in Spain’s Historical Record
The summer of 2026 has overtaken the previous record-holders in Spain.
Summer 2025 finished approximately 2.2°C above the reference average, while summer 2022 was around 2.1°C above average.
With 2026 expected to reach approximately +2.5°C, Spain has now experienced three consecutive summers at historically high levels.
The heat was not limited to a few isolated days.
According to AEMET's assessment reported by Noudiari, temperatures remained above normal across almost the entire country from mid-May onwards, apart from brief cooler periods at the beginning of June and towards the end of August.
Ibiza’s Long, Hot Summer
Ibiza has experienced its own share of exceptionally warm conditions during the 2026 season.
The island is accustomed to hot Mediterranean summers, but this year's prolonged warmth has been particularly noticeable.
For visitors, the conditions have meant long stretches of beach weather, warm evenings and sea temperatures that have made swimming and boating particularly appealing.
But extreme and persistent heat also brings challenges, particularly for residents, outdoor workers and anyone spending extended periods in the sun.
July Was Particularly Remarkable
The exceptional conditions were already becoming clear earlier in the summer.
July 2026 was reported as the hottest July ever recorded in Ibiza, highlighting how unusual the season had become even before the final summer figures were available.
That contributed to a summer in which high temperatures were not simply a short-lived heatwave but part of a much longer pattern.
A Brief Cool-Down Before Summer Ends
Interestingly, the final days of meteorological summer have not felt representative of the season as a whole across Spain.
A cold front brought temperatures between 7°C and 13°C below normal to parts of western and central Spain, with Madrid recording a maximum of only 21.4°C on Thursday.
Temperatures then began recovering as the month came to an end.
The brief change in weather, however, was not enough to prevent 2026 from taking the record.
What It Means for Ibiza
For Ibiza, summer weather is closely connected to tourism.
The island's beaches, outdoor restaurants, boat trips, beach clubs, sunsets and nightlife all depend heavily on the Mediterranean climate that attracts millions of visitors every year.
A warmer summer can create ideal conditions for many holiday activities, but increasingly high temperatures also raise questions about heat, water consumption, energy use and the long-term impact of changing weather patterns on the island.
For visitors, it is another reminder that Ibiza's summer climate can be exceptionally hot — and that enjoying the island responsibly includes staying hydrated, using sun protection and taking breaks from the midday heat.
Another Record-Breaking Summer
As August comes to a close, Ibiza is preparing to move into September, when the island traditionally begins its gradual transition towards a quieter and milder part of the year.
But summer 2026 will be remembered for its temperatures.
Spain is set to close the meteorological summer with its highest average temperature in the historical record, approximately 2.5°C above the 1991–2020 reference average.
And on Ibiza, where summer is at the heart of the island's tourism identity, the extraordinary heat has been one of the defining stories of the 2026 season.
