Ibiza is set to gain its first-ever nonstop air connection with the United States, after United Airlines announced a new seasonal service linking Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey with Ibiza Airport from May 2027.
The new route is part of United's largest international expansion in the airline's history, with 10 new international destinations being added across Europe and Asia.
First Direct US Connection for Ibiza
United will begin flying between Newark and Ibiza on May 31, 2027, with four flights per week during the summer season.
The route will be operated using United's new Airbus A321XLR, a long-range narrowbody aircraft designed for transatlantic services.
The new service is particularly significant for Ibiza because it will create the island's first nonstop connection with a US airport.
Until now, travellers flying between Ibiza and New York have generally needed to connect elsewhere in Europe.
Eight New Routes From Newark
Ibiza is one of eight new international destinations United is adding from Newark as part of the expansion.
The airline will also launch new Newark services to:
- Luxembourg City
- Marseille
- Valencia
- Terceira in the Azores
- Ljubljana
- Olbia in Sardinia
- Catania in Sicily
The other two new international destinations are Okinawa, Japan, from San Francisco, and Toulouse, France, from Washington Dulles.
United says eight of the 10 new destinations will have no nonstop service from another US airline, highlighting the scale of the expansion.
Why Ibiza Matters to United
The addition of Ibiza reflects United's growing focus on destinations beyond the traditional European gateways.
Rather than concentrating exclusively on major cities such as London, Paris or Rome, the airline is expanding into destinations that appeal to travellers looking for Mediterranean islands, leisure destinations and less conventional European getaways.
Ibiza fits particularly well into that strategy, combining international recognition with strong demand for summer holidays, nightlife, beaches and luxury travel.
United's announcement comes as transatlantic travel remains strong, with the airline saying it is continuing to expand its international network and now serves more than 160 international destinations.
The A321XLR Will Fly the Route
The Ibiza service will be among the routes operated with United's new Airbus A321XLR.
The aircraft will feature 20 United Polaris business-class suites, 12 United Premium Plus seats and Economy Plus seating. United also says the aircraft will offer features including free Starlink Wi-Fi for MileagePlus members and 4K OLED seatback screens with Bluetooth connectivity.
The A321XLR's longer range allows United to connect destinations such as Ibiza directly with the US without requiring a larger widebody aircraft.
A Major Boost for Ibiza's US Tourism Market
The new connection could make Ibiza considerably easier to reach for American travellers, particularly those based around New York and the wider northeastern United States.
Instead of connecting through Madrid, Barcelona, London or another European airport, passengers will eventually be able to board a nonstop flight at Newark and arrive directly in Ibiza.
The announcement has already been welcomed locally, with Spanish media describing the route as a long-awaited direct connection between Ibiza and New York.
For Ibiza's tourism industry, the route could also strengthen the island's position among affluent US travellers and potentially support demand for longer-haul summer holidays.
When Do Flights Start?
United's new Newark–Ibiza service begins May 31, 2027, operating four times a week with the Airbus A321XLR.
The airline's announcement says the new international flights are scheduled to begin from March 2027, with the Ibiza route following at the start of the summer season.
