German Tourism to Ibiza and Formentera Drops for a Second Consecutive Year
German visitors remain an important part of the tourism market in Ibiza and Formentera, but the latest figures highlight a significant shift in the islands' relationship with one of Europe's major source markets.
According to data examined by Diario de Ibiza, the number of German tourists arriving in the Pitiusas fell for the second consecutive year in 2024, declining by 4.96% compared with 2023.
The trend is particularly interesting because Germany remains one of Spain's most important international tourism markets. Spain welcomed a record 12 million German visitors in 2025, generating €15.8 billion in tourism spending.
A Market Heavily Concentrated on Mallorca
German tourism across the Balearic Islands is highly concentrated in Mallorca.
In 2025, the archipelago received approximately 4.93 million German tourists, representing around 26% of all visitors to the Balearics. Mallorca alone welcomed about 4.57 million of them.
That leaves Ibiza and Formentera with a considerably smaller share of the German market.
This makes the evolution of German tourism in the Pitiusas particularly important for understanding how visitor preferences are changing between the Balearic islands.
The German Market Is Changing
The decline in German arrivals to Ibiza and Formentera comes against a more complicated picture across Europe.
German travellers are still travelling frequently and spending heavily. The 2026 German Tourism Analysis found that 64% of Germans took at least one trip lasting five days or more in 2025, while 44% travelled multiple times during the year.
Spain remains the country's most popular foreign destination, but cost is becoming an increasingly important consideration.
The same research found that German travellers spent an average of €143 per day in Spain in 2025, compared with €108 in Türkiye and €97 in Croatia.
That price difference is becoming increasingly relevant as Mediterranean destinations compete for German visitors.
Ibiza and Formentera Face Stronger Competition
The Balearics are no longer competing only with other Spanish islands.
German travellers have a growing range of Mediterranean destinations, including Greece, Croatia and Türkiye, where holiday costs can be significantly lower.
European Tourism Commission data shows that German arrivals to Spain were down 2.8% in the early months of 2026, while Croatia recorded particularly strong growth in the German market.
For Ibiza and Formentera, this creates an important challenge: maintaining their appeal while operating at a considerably higher price point than many competing destinations.
But Germany Remains Important to Spain
The decline in the Pitiusas should not be interpreted as Germans turning away from Spain altogether.
The Spanish Ministry of Industry and Tourism reported that Germany remained Spain's second-largest tourism market by expenditure, air passengers and hotel overnight stays in 2025. German visitors generated more than 40 million overnight stays across Spain.
And expectations for 2026 remain relatively strong. Spain was still the most frequently mentioned individual foreign destination among German travellers with defined holiday plans, according to the ministry.
A Different Tourism Opportunity for Ibiza
For Ibiza, the figures raise an interesting question about the future of the German market.
Rather than simply trying to increase visitor numbers, the island could have an opportunity to attract German travellers outside the traditional peak summer period.
Germany has historically been an important market for shoulder-season travel across the Balearics, and the broader tourism industry is increasingly looking at culture, nature, gastronomy and experiences as ways of extending the season.
That could be particularly relevant to Ibiza and Formentera, where the appeal extends well beyond July and August.
From cycling and hiking to gastronomy, local culture, beaches and rural tourism, the islands have many experiences that can be enjoyed outside the busiest months.
What the Numbers Tell Us
The German market remains extremely valuable to Spain, but the latest figures from Ibiza and Formentera suggest that the islands cannot take that demand for granted.
With competition from more affordable Mediterranean destinations, changing travel habits and Ibiza's increasingly premium positioning, attracting German visitors may require more than simply promoting the traditional summer holiday.
The opportunity could lie in showing a different side of the Pitiusas: more seasons, more experiences and more reasons to visit beyond the peak summer months.
For Ibiza, the question is no longer simply how many German tourists arrive, but what kind of German traveller the island wants to attract next.
