Pere Joan Pons Officially Replaces Alfonso Rodríguez as Government Delegate in the Balearic Islands

October 28, 2026

Pere Joan Pons Sampietro has officially been appointed the new Government Delegate in the Balearic Islands, replacing Alfonso Luis Rodríguez Badal. The change was formalised in Spain's Official State Gazette (BOE) on Wednesday, 28 October 2026, following approval by the Council of Ministers the previous day.

Two royal decrees, dated 27 October, establish Rodríguez's departure and Pons's appointment. The decision marks a change in the central government's senior representative in the Balearic Islands, with Pons expected to begin his institutional agenda immediately.

Appointment Confirmed in the Official State Gazette

Royal Decree 934/2026 formalises the cessation of Alfonso Luis Rodríguez Badal as Government Delegate in the Balearic Islands, thanking him for his services.

Royal Decree 936/2026 appoints Pere Joan Pons Sampietro to the position. Both decrees were signed by King Felipe VI and the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, and published in the BOE on 28 October.

The appointment follows the decision taken by the Council of Ministers on Tuesday, 27 October. The official publication completes the formal administrative step required to confirm the change of office.

Why Alfonso Rodríguez Is Leaving the Post

Rodríguez announced his departure on 13 October after almost three years leading the Government Delegation in the Balearic Islands.

His decision is linked to his intention to focus on the PSOE's candidacy for mayor of Calvià in the municipal elections scheduled for May 2027. The municipality, located in Mallorca, is one of the principal local authorities on the island.

The change had been anticipated earlier in October, with Pons identified as Rodríguez's successor ahead of the Council of Ministers meeting that approved the appointment.

Who Is Pere Joan Pons Sampietro?

Born in Palma, Pere Joan Pons has a background in journalism, law and public administration.

He holds degrees in Information Sciences from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and Law from the University of Barcelona. His professional experience includes work in journalism, European media, international organisations and public administration.

Pons served as a member of the Spanish Congress of Deputies from 2016 to 2023 before becoming a senator representing Mallorca. He also served as president of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), a role he held from 2025.

His experience in national politics and international institutions precedes his appointment as the central government's representative in the Balearic Islands.

First Institutional Engagement and Formal Handover

Pons is expected to begin his institutional agenda on Wednesday, coinciding with a visit to Palma by Spain's Minister for Inclusion, Social Security and Migration, Elma Saiz.

The formal ceremony marking his assumption of office is expected to take place the following week. This is separate from the appointment itself, which became official through publication of the royal decree in the BOE.

The transition places Pons at the head of the Government Delegation responsible for representing the Spanish central government across Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera.

The role involves coordinating the central administration's presence in the islands and working with national, regional and local authorities on matters within the government's remit.
