Ibiza Family Tourism Faces Rising Prices and Shorter Stays Despite 58% Return Rate

October 29, 2026

Family tourism remains an important part of Ibiza's visitor economy, but rising holiday costs and shorter stays are creating new challenges for the island. The issue was discussed at the 12th Holiday Rental Congress on 27 October 2026, where tourism officials, accommodation businesses and researchers examined how Ibiza can remain attractive to families.

According to figures presented by Juan Miguel Costa, the Ibiza Island Council's director of Tourism Promotion, family travellers account for approximately one in four visitors to the island. Their average stay is close to a week, satisfaction was reported at 87 out of 100, and 58% return to Ibiza.

However, speakers at the congress described a shift in travel habits, with some family holidays becoming significantly shorter and higher prices influencing decisions about where to stay and what to do.

Family Holidays Are Becoming Shorter

Costa told the congress that holidays that once lasted around ten days are increasingly being replaced by trips of approximately three to three and a half days.

This change affects how visitors use the island and how tourism businesses operate. Shorter stays can mean more frequent arrivals and departures for accommodation providers, while restaurants, shops and leisure businesses have less time to benefit from each visiting group.

Montse Monsalve, who moderated a panel titled Family Tourism: A Strategic Opportunity for Ibiza, recalled a time when families stayed longer and spread their spending across local shops, markets and other businesses.

The discussion highlighted the importance of looking beyond visitor numbers alone. The length of a stay, the activities visitors choose and the way they distribute their spending can all influence the economic contribution of family tourism.

Rising Prices Are Making Ibiza Harder to Afford

Affordability emerged as one of the main concerns during the congress.

A holiday-rental owner in Santa Eulària explained that she had equipped a property designed for eight guests with family-friendly features, including toys for children, but was receiving relatively few bookings from families.

She attributed the problem to prices, while also pointing to the fees, taxes and operating costs faced by property owners.

The discussion raised a broader question about Ibiza's tourism model: how can the island maintain a premium hospitality offering while remaining accessible to families who have traditionally visited for longer holidays?

Luis Falcón, managing director of inAtlas, argued that high-end tourism and family tourism do not necessarily have to be mutually exclusive. He suggested that the more important issue is how tourism income is distributed across the island.

Figures presented during the panel put average spending at approximately €2,000 per person per trip in Ibiza, compared with around €1,250 in other Spanish destinations. These figures were cited during the discussion and should be understood in that context, rather than as a comprehensive measure of spending by every visitor.

More Activities Could Help Attract Families

Carmen Sarah Einsle, a professor at the University of Alicante, argued that the definition of family tourism has broadened. Families may travel for sporting events, cultural activities or other experiences, making it increasingly difficult to classify every trip within a single tourism category.

She said Ibiza needs a wider range of activities and services that appeal to different family members, including restaurants, sports, entertainment and dedicated spaces for children.

Digital platforms are also becoming increasingly influential in holiday planning. Teenagers and young adults can play an important role in choosing destinations and accommodation, making online information and suitable activities important considerations for families.

Costa highlighted Ibiza Family Moments, a quality label promoted by the island council to bring together family-friendly accommodation, restaurants, leisure activities and other tourism services. The initiative supports targeted promotion to specific visitor profiles.

Holiday Rentals Remain Important to Family Tourism

José Antonio Llano, president of the Association of Holiday Rental Accommodation in Ibiza and Formentera (AVAT), said families account for close to half of the customers staying in holiday rental properties.

He highlighted the economic contribution of these visitors, who may use a variety of services during their holidays, including restaurants, vehicle rentals, shops and leisure businesses.

Holiday rentals therefore remain an important part of the discussion about family tourism, although rising prices and changing travel habits are creating concerns among some operators.

The congress also considered the need to balance tourism accommodation with the island's wider environmental and housing challenges.

Can Ibiza Retain Its Family Holiday Market?

The figures presented at the congress suggest that Ibiza continues to attract repeat family visitors, with reported satisfaction levels remaining relatively high. At the same time, industry representatives are concerned that affordability and shorter stays could weaken the island's traditional family tourism market.

The challenge is not simply to attract more visitors, but to provide experiences and accommodation that meet the needs of families while allowing local businesses to benefit from their spending.

Improving the range of family-friendly activities, strengthening promotion and addressing the cost of holidays were among the issues raised during the discussion.

For Ibiza, maintaining a varied tourism offer may be essential to ensuring that families continue to see the island as a destination for more than a short break.
