A major road improvement project is set to transform the entrance to Santa Eulària in the Can Marçà area, with the Consell d’Eivissa committing almost €945,000 to improve safety, pedestrian access and mobility along the EI-200.

The agreement between the Consell d’Eivissa and Santa Eulària Town Council was signed on September 2, allowing the project to move towards the tender and construction phase.

The Consell will finance the work with a maximum contribution of €944,391.17, while Santa Eulària Town Council will be responsible for putting the project out to tender and carrying out the works.

Improving the Can Marçà Entrance

The project covers approximately 700 metres of the EI-200, between kilometre points 3.7 and 4.4, as the road passes through the Can Marçà settlement on the approach to Santa Eulària.

The area has increasingly taken on the characteristics of an urban road as the surrounding population and development have grown.

The planned improvements are therefore focused on making the section safer and easier to navigate for pedestrians, residents, drivers and public transport users.

New Pedestrian Routes

One of the main elements of the project will be the creation of pedestrian routes on both sides of the road.

Existing accesses will also be reorganised, helping to create a more orderly connection between the homes, businesses and other properties along the route.

The project also includes improvements to surface drainage and street lighting.

A New Traffic-Light-Controlled Crossing

A traffic-light-controlled pedestrian crossing is also planned as part of the works.

This is intended to improve the ability of pedestrians to cross the EI-200 safely, particularly in an area where residential properties, businesses and significant traffic volumes currently share the same space.

Two new bus stops, one on each side of the road, will also be created.

Dedicated areas for waste collection are included in the project as part of the wider reorganisation of the roadside environment.

A Project Years in the Making

The Can Marçà improvement has been under development for several years.

The Consell had already identified the area in 2023 as one of the locations where improvements to pedestrian safety and mobility were needed.

Further progress was presented in September 2025, when representatives from the Consell and Santa Eulària outlined the planned collaboration between the two administrations.

Under the agreement now signed, the Consell is responsible for financing and having prepared the project, while the Town Council will handle the tendering and execution of the works.

What the Authorities Say

Consell president Vicent Marí described the agreement as an important step towards delivering a project that has been requested by residents for some time.

He said the road section has effectively become an urban crossing as the Can Marçà settlement has grown, requiring improved accessibility and safety.

Santa Eulària mayor Carmen Ferrer also highlighted pedestrian safety, pointing to the mix of homes, businesses, access points, public transport and traffic currently sharing the area.

Part of a Wider Approach to Road Improvements

The collaboration between the Consell and Santa Eulària follows a model already used for other road improvements in the municipality, including projects at Ca na Negreta and Sant Carles.

In those cases, the Consell provides the funding while the local council takes responsibility for the implementation of the works.

For Can Marçà, the newly signed agreement means the project can now progress towards construction.

What Will Change

Once completed, the project is expected to provide:

• New pedestrian routes on both sides of the EI-200

• A traffic-light-controlled pedestrian crossing

• Two new bus stops

• Reorganised property and road accesses

• Improved surface drainage

• Renewed road lighting

• Designated waste collection areas

The overall aim is to make the entrance to Santa Eulària through Can Marçà safer and more accessible while better organising a section of road that now functions as part of an urban settlement.

With almost €945,000 committed to the project, the next stage will be the tendering and execution of the works by Santa Eulària Town Council.
