August 2026 has gone down as an exceptional month for temperatures across the Balearic Islands, with Ibiza and Formentera experiencing an unusually hot end to the summer.

According to data from Spain's State Meteorological Agency, AEMET, the Balearic Islands recorded their warmest August since records began in 1961, with an average temperature of 28.3°C and an overall anomaly of 2.7°C above the usual average.

The Pityusic Islands were also significantly warmer than normal, with Ibiza recording a temperature anomaly of 2.4°C and Formentera 1.5°C above their respective August averages.

Ibiza's Exceptionally Warm August

For Ibiza, August was classified as extremely warm, with the island's average temperature reaching around 28.2°C.

That was approximately 2.4°C above the normal August average.

The heat was not limited to daytime temperatures. Nights were also unusually warm, creating prolonged periods in which temperatures remained high around the clock.

According to AEMET data reported by Cadena SER, Ibiza experienced nights when temperatures failed to fall below 30°C, contributing to the intensity of the month's heat.

Formentera Also Experienced Above-Average Heat

Formentera recorded an average temperature of around 28.6°C during August.

Although its temperature anomaly was smaller than Ibiza's, at approximately 1.5°C above normal, the island also experienced an exceptionally warm month.

Together, Ibiza and Formentera experienced a summer characterised by persistent warmth and several periods of particularly intense heat.

Temperatures Reached Almost 40°C

The hottest part of the month arrived during the second half of August.

Temperatures reached 39.2°C on August 13, with Sant Joan and Sant Antoni among the locations registering particularly high values.

A heatwave followed between August 14 and 20, adding to an already exceptionally warm month.

The combination of very high daytime temperatures and warm nights made the heat particularly persistent.

A Dry August Too

The month was not only unusually hot but also drier than normal.

Ibiza recorded approximately 7.1 litres of rainfall per square metre, around 70% below its usual August rainfall.

Formentera received approximately 10 litres per square metre, around 25% below normal.

There were also no days with thunderstorms during the month, despite thunderstorms normally occurring during August.

The combination of heat and limited rainfall added further pressure to the island's water resources and natural environment.

Two Different Pressures: Heat and Drought

For Ibiza and Formentera, the combination of high temperatures and below-average rainfall is particularly significant.

The islands already have limited freshwater resources, and the summer tourist season places additional demand on water supplies.

Agriculture is also affected by prolonged heat and drought, with farmers increasingly having to consider which crops can cope best with changing conditions.

The carob tree, for example, has recently attracted renewed attention because of its relative resistance to drought and its potential role in Ibiza's agricultural future.

A Summer of Extreme Heat

August followed an already unusually warm summer across the region.

The wider Balearic Islands recorded their hottest August since 1961, while other parts of Spain and Europe also experienced exceptional temperatures during the 2026 summer.

For Ibiza, the month continued a pattern of frequent heat episodes that has affected the island throughout the summer.

Earlier in July, Ibiza itself also experienced exceptionally high temperatures, with the month recording a significant positive temperature anomaly.

The Mediterranean Heat

The intense temperatures are particularly noticeable on islands surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea.

Warm sea temperatures can contribute to persistently warm nights, making it more difficult for temperatures to fall after sunset.

For residents and visitors, this means that extreme heat can become a continuous experience rather than something limited to the hottest part of the afternoon.

For the natural environment, prolonged warmth can also increase evaporation and water demand.

What the Record Means for Ibiza

A single month's weather does not determine a long-term climate trend, but the latest figures add to a growing pattern of unusually warm conditions across the Mediterranean.

For Ibiza, the implications extend beyond beach weather.

Higher temperatures can affect water consumption, agriculture, wildfire risk, energy demand and the island's natural ecosystems.

The particularly dry August also means that rainfall during the coming months will be closely watched.

Looking Towards Autumn

With September now underway, attention turns to whether temperatures will return closer to seasonal averages and whether the island will receive more substantial rainfall.

After an August that combined record-breaking heat with unusually dry conditions, cooler weather and meaningful rainfall would provide some relief to the island's water resources and countryside.

For now, however, August 2026 stands out as one of the most exceptional summer months recorded across Ibiza, Formentera and the wider Balearic Islands.
