Major Drug Seizure in Ibiza: Nearly 28 Kilos of Ketamine and 7 Kilos of Cocaine

The Policía Nacional has seized nearly 28 kilograms of ketamine and more than seven kilograms of cocaine in Ibiza, as part of an investigation into suspected drug trafficking during the summer season.

A German national has been arrested in connection with the investigation, which was carried out by the Ibiza Local Police Judicial Brigade's UDYCO unit under the operation known as Operación Verano.

According to the police, investigators also seized hashish, €22,000 in cash and several mobile phones.

Nearly 35 Kilos of Drugs Seized

The seizure included:

  • 27.75 kilograms of ketamine

  • 7.2 kilograms of cocaine

  • 42 grams of hashish

  • €22,000 in cash

  • Several mobile phones

  • Two vehicles

The combined quantity of ketamine and cocaine alone was almost 35 kilograms.

The police described the operation as the dismantling of an important storage and distribution point for drugs on the island.

Investigation During Ibiza's Summer Season

The investigation was conducted by officers from the Unidad de Drogas y Crimen Organizado (UDYCO) of the Ibiza Local Police Judicial Brigade.

According to the Policía Nacional, investigators became aware of a German man who had allegedly travelled to Ibiza during the summer with the intention of engaging in activities related to drug trafficking.

The investigation then focused on a vehicle that was reportedly parked permanently in the garage of a residential development.

Police suspected that the vehicle was being used to store drugs before their subsequent distribution.

A Hidden Compartment Inside a Vehicle

One of the most notable discoveries came during the search of the vehicle.

Police officers found what they described as a sophisticated electronic system designed to conceal and store drugs.

Known in police terminology as a “caleta,” the hidden compartment was located inside one of the vehicles parked in the garage.

The system was allegedly being used to hide the substances from detection.

Arrest and Searches

The investigation entered its operational phase on August 24, when officers arrested the suspect and searched his home.

Two vehicles were also seized during the operation.

Alongside the drugs, police recovered the cash and mobile phones as part of the investigation.

The suspect was subsequently brought before the judicial authorities.

A judge ordered that he be placed in provisional custody while the case continues.

Part of Operación Verano

The investigation forms part of the Policía Nacional's Operación Verano, which focuses on policing and security during Ibiza's particularly busy summer period.

The island's population and nightlife activity increase substantially during the tourist season, making drug trafficking and other forms of organised criminal activity an important focus for law enforcement.

The latest operation represents one of the larger drug seizures reported in Ibiza this summer.

Ketamine and Cocaine in Ibiza

The seizure also highlights the range of substances involved in Ibiza's illegal drug market.

Ketamine, originally developed as an anaesthetic and used medically and veterinary medicine, has also become associated with recreational drug use.

Cocaine remains one of the most widely trafficked illegal drugs in Europe.

The quantities involved in this investigation, however, were considerably larger than what would normally be associated with personal possession, which is why police are investigating the case as suspected drug trafficking.

Police Targeting Drug Distribution

Rather than focusing only on individual possession, investigations such as this one aim to identify the people and locations involved in the supply and distribution of drugs.

In this case, investigators say they identified a suspected storage location and subsequently recovered a substantial quantity of drugs from the concealed compartment of a vehicle.

The Policía Nacional says the operation has allowed them to dismantle what they consider to have been an important storage and distribution point on the island.

The Investigation Continues

The arrest and seizure mark a significant development, although the judicial proceedings are continuing.

The suspect is presumed innocent unless and until a court determines otherwise.

For now, the operation has resulted in the seizure of almost 35 kilograms of ketamine and cocaine combined, along with hashish, cash and vehicles.

The case is another example of the police operations carried out in Ibiza during the summer season to target suspected drug trafficking and distribution.
