A 25-year-old Irish tourist has died in Ibiza after becoming seriously ill while out with friends in San Antonio on the night of the August 12 solar eclipse.
Emergency services were alerted at around 10:15pm after the man fell ill on S’Arenal beach, in the centre of San Antonio Bay. According to reports, he was suffering from hypothermia and muscle stiffness when help was called.
Medical professionals and police attempted to save him at the scene before he was taken to Can Misses Hospital in Ibiza Town. He suffered cardiac arrest and was pronounced dead shortly before midnight.
The Incident Happened Outside the Eclipse Festival
The death occurred on a night when thousands of people had gathered across Ibiza to witness the total solar eclipse.
However, officials have stressed that the Irish tourist was not attending the Feels Like Festival Eclipse Festival taking place at S’Arenal beach.
A spokesperson for the festival said the incident happened outside the event premises, on the San Antonio seafront promenade.
Despite this, medical and security personnel from the festival went to the scene and assisted the emergency services and Guardia Civil.
Investigation Underway
The circumstances surrounding the man's death remain under investigation.
The Guardia Civil has reportedly been looking into a possible connection with drug consumption, but no official cause of death has been released.
The results of the post-mortem examination have not been made public and are expected to be provided to the investigating court, in accordance with normal Spanish procedure.
San Antonio Town Hall has confirmed that a man died after suffering cardiac arrest on Wednesday evening but has not released further details.
A Tragic Night in Ibiza
The incident happened during one of the busiest and most unusual nights of Ibiza's summer, as visitors and residents gathered around the island to watch the rare total solar eclipse.
For the many people who travelled to San Antonio for the astronomical event, the night was expected to be a celebration. The death has instead cast a tragic shadow over the evening.
The identity of the Irish tourist has not been publicly released.
