Sant Antoni de Portmany has reinforced police surveillance across its beaches and coastline during the 2026 summer season, with the municipality recording 39 interventions related to illegal street vending between June and September.
The figures form part of the seasonal activity report from the Unidad Territorial de Playas (UTP) of the Policía Local de Sant Antoni, which combines enforcement work with preventative patrols across the municipality's coastal areas.
39 Interventions Related to Illegal Street Vending
Between June and September, the UTP carried out 39 interventions connected with illegal street vending.
The activity was part of a wider coastal surveillance operation during the months of greatest tourist activity.
The unit also carried out interventions involving public safety, personal mobility vehicles, municipal regulations and police procedures.
The available municipal reporting describes the 39 cases as interventions related to illegal street vending. It does not establish that every intervention resulted in a fine or other specific sanction.
410 People Identified and 187 Vehicles Checked
The UTP's work extended beyond street vending.
During the four-month period, officers identified 410 people and checked 187 vehicles.
The unit also recorded 82 actions related to traffic.
These figures form part of the overall activity of the specialist beach unit rather than representing only enforcement against illegal vendors.
Patrols on Foot, by Bicycle and at Sea
The UTP used several different forms of patrol during the summer.
Officers operated on foot and by bicycle, while plain-clothes services were also carried out in areas where this type of surveillance was considered appropriate.
The unit also used police jet skis to monitor the coastline and respond to incidents in areas that cannot be reached as easily from land.
The maritime component allows officers to extend surveillance beyond the beach itself and to provide support when incidents occur close to the coast.
Cooperation With Other Coastal Services
The Policía Local also worked alongside other services and administrations during the season.
This included collaboration with the municipal lifeguard and rescue service, Ports de les Illes Balears and other organisations with responsibilities in coastal and maritime areas.
The cooperation is intended to improve the response to incidents requiring coordination between different services.
A Preventative Approach to Beach Security
According to the Policía Local, the UTP's role is not limited to reacting after an infringement occurs.
The unit maintains a continuous presence across the beaches and coastline, with the aim of preventing certain behaviours and responding quickly when problems arise.
The police say that experience from previous seasons has helped officers develop a better understanding of the specific characteristics and recurring problems of different coastal areas.
The municipality describes this presence as part of a preventative approach to maintaining safety and coexistence during the busiest months of the year.
Neus Mateu Highlights Visible Police Presence
Sant Antoni councillor for Citizen Security Neus Mateu said the objective of the model is to maintain a police presence that is close, visible and adapted to the particular characteristics of the municipality's coastal areas during periods of high visitor numbers.
The different patrol formats allow the unit to adapt its work according to the location and type of incident.
The use of land and maritime patrols also gives officers greater coverage of the municipality's beaches and nearby coastal waters.
A Specialist Unit for the Tourist Season
The Unidad Territorial de Playas is designed specifically to address the particular policing needs of Sant Antoni's beaches and coastline during the tourist season.
Its 2026 activity included illegal street vending, traffic, public safety, personal mobility vehicles and municipal regulations, alongside other police duties.
The combination of preventative patrols and targeted interventions forms part of Sant Antoni's approach to managing its coastal areas during the months when visitor numbers are highest.
