HISTORY AND CHARACTERISTICS

Tanzanite is a violet-blue variety of Zoisite . Its name comes from the place where it was discovered in 1976, in the Mereari mountains, in northern Tanzania. It was discovered by a gold prospector named Manuel d'Souza. Tanzanite is considered one of the rarest mineral specimens in the world.

Tanzanite is characterized by its pleochroism, a phenomenon that makes us see the mineral in different colors depending on the position and direction in which it is viewed and according to the existing lighting. Colors ranging from dark blue to light blue, gray, purple and burgundy can be appreciated.

This mineral is linked to the Masai culture, where it was said that the color blue was sacred. In ancient times, Masai women who gave birth to a child received a blue dress and pearls, and today Masai chiefs continue to adapt this ritual, as women who give birth are given Tanzanite stones as a sign of good omens for a fortunate and healthy life.

Currently, only one natural deposit of tanzanite has been found worldwide. The only deposit is located in Tanzania, on a 5 km2 hill near the town of Ausha, adjacent to Kilimanjaro.
