Ibiza Sea Temperatures Reach Extreme Levels 33°C as Mediterranean Marine Heatwave Intensifies

Ibiza and the wider Balearic Islands are experiencing exceptionally warm seas this summer, as an intense marine heatwave continues to affect the western Mediterranean.

A report by We Rave You highlighted a seawater temperature of around 33°C recorded in the Balearic region, as the Mediterranean experiences one of its most significant marine heat episodes in recent years.

The story comes amid growing evidence that the unusually warm conditions are not an isolated measurement. AEMET reported that the Balearic Sea recorded its highest temperature for the corresponding date on 25 of the 39 days between July 1 and August 8, based on a historical series extending back at least to 1940.

33°C Sea Temperatures Recorded

One of the most striking measurements came from the Dragonera buoy, where the water temperature reached approximately 33°C on August 5.

The reading was reported as an absolute record for that buoy. Other parts of the Balearics have also experienced extraordinary temperatures, with readings above 30°C recorded at several monitoring stations.

It is important to clarify that the 33°C reading was recorded at Dragonera, near Mallorca, rather than directly off Ibiza. However, it is part of the same exceptional marine heat event affecting the Balearic Sea.

Satellite observations have also shown widespread abnormal temperatures around the archipelago.

The Balearic Sea Is Breaking Records

The scale and persistence of the heat are particularly concerning to scientists.

According to EFE reporting based on data from the Balearic Coastal Prediction and Observation System, the average sea surface temperature in the Balearic Sea reached 29.5°C over a recent 10-day period, approximately 3.7°C above normal.

On August 15, satellite measurements reached 29.7°C, described by researchers as an unprecedented August value for the Balearic Sea.

The issue is not simply how high temperatures have become, but how long they have remained elevated.

A Marine Heatwave Across the Mediterranean

Copernicus data showed marine heatwave conditions continuing across the western Mediterranean on August 13, with some areas recording sea temperatures approximately 6°C above the long-term average.

NOAA also currently lists the Mediterranean among the regions experiencing marine heatwave conditions.

This means Ibiza is experiencing part of a much larger regional phenomenon rather than an isolated local temperature spike.

Why Extremely Warm Seas Matter

The Mediterranean's marine ecosystems are adapted to seasonal changes in temperature, but prolonged extreme heat can place significant stress on marine life.

Scientists have warned that marine heatwaves can contribute to species die-offs, disrupt food chains and force some marine species to move towards cooler waters.

The consequences can extend beyond the sea itself. Warmer ocean temperatures can increase humidity and nighttime temperatures along coastal areas and can contribute to conditions favourable for intense weather events later in the year.

Climate Change Is Making the Heat More Extreme

The extraordinary temperatures come as new analysis from World Weather Attribution links this year's European marine heatwaves strongly to human-caused climate change.

The analysis found that climate change contributed approximately 2°C of warming to Mediterranean marine temperatures during the extreme event. It also estimated that around 80% of the western Mediterranean experienced marine heatwave conditions this year, compared with roughly 40% in a world without human-caused warming.

The researchers concluded that the most extreme temperatures observed this year in parts of the Mediterranean would have been virtually impossible without human-driven climate change.

What It Means for Ibiza

For Ibiza, the unusually warm sea is another reminder of the environmental pressures facing the island during its busiest season.

The Mediterranean is central to Ibiza's identity, tourism economy and marine ecosystems. From swimming and boating to Posidonia meadows and coastal biodiversity, the health of the surrounding sea is fundamental to the island.

The current marine heatwave therefore represents more than an unusual summer swimming temperature. It is part of a broader environmental event that scientists are closely monitoring across the Balearic Islands and the Mediterranean.
