A Historic City Above the Harbour

The name Dalt Vila means “Upper Town” in Catalan, an apt description of this historic district perched above the surrounding city. The site has more than 2,500 years of history, reflecting Ibiza’s long-standing importance in Mediterranean life.

Over the centuries, different civilisations left their mark on the settlement, its streets and its buildings. Today, walking through Dalt Vila reveals a fascinating mixture of historic architecture, peaceful squares and narrow passageways that follow the contours of the hillside.

The Walls That Changed the City

One of Dalt Vila’s defining features is its impressive Renaissance fortification system. Built during the sixteenth century, the walls were designed to strengthen the city’s defences at a time when advances in military technology were transforming warfare.

The project took place between 1554 and 1585, involving Italian military engineers Giovanni Battista Calvi and Jacobo Paleazzo Fratin. Seven bastions form part of the defensive circuit, creating an imposing structure that remains remarkably well preserved.

In 1999, Dalt Vila was recognised by UNESCO as part of the World Heritage property Ibiza, Biodiversity and Culture, highlighting its outstanding historical and architectural significance.

A Walk Through the Old Town

The monumental Portal de ses Taules provides one of the most memorable entrances into the fortified city. Beyond it, the streets climb towards the cathedral, passing historic buildings, small squares and inviting corners along the way.

The beauty of Dalt Vila lies partly in its contrasts. Some streets feel lively and welcoming, while others become quieter as you move away from the main routes. Look closely and you will notice details in the stonework, traditional doorways and architectural features that reveal the layers of history within the old town.

Dalt Vila is best experienced on foot, with comfortable footwear and enough time to enjoy its steep streets and uneven surfaces without rushing.
