United Airlines to Launch Direct New York–Ibiza Flights in Summer 2027

Ibiza is set to get its first-ever direct air connection with the United States, with United Airlines announcing a new seasonal route between Newark Liberty International Airport and Ibiza starting in May 2027.

The announcement marks a major development for Ibiza's international tourism market and fulfils a long-standing ambition of local tourism authorities and businesses to establish a direct connection with the US.

Flights Will Start in May 2027

United will begin operating the Newark–Ibiza route on May 31, 2027, with four flights per week during the summer season. The service will connect Ibiza directly with the New York metropolitan area through Newark.

The route is expected to operate with an Airbus A321XLR, United's new long-range aircraft designed for international routes that do not necessarily require a larger wide-body plane.

According to the airline's published schedule, the Newark–Ibiza service is currently planned as flight UA549 outbound from Newark and UA550 returning from Ibiza, with four weekly frequencies.

Ibiza's First Direct US Connection

The significance of the announcement goes beyond simply adding another route.

Ibiza has never previously had a nonstop connection to a US airport, meaning travellers from New York and the surrounding region have generally needed to connect through another European city.

For years, Ibiza's tourism authorities have been pushing for a direct US connection, particularly because American visitors are considered an attractive market for the island's tourism economy.

The Consell de Ibiza had already raised the importance of establishing a direct connection with the United States during discussions with American diplomatic representatives in Spain.

Why the US Market Matters to Ibiza

The North American market is particularly interesting for Ibiza because US travellers tend to be associated with longer stays and higher holiday spending.

Local tourism officials have previously highlighted the potential value of attracting more American visitors directly rather than relying on connections through cities such as Madrid, Barcelona, London, Paris or Lisbon.

A nonstop flight could therefore make Ibiza considerably more accessible to travellers who may previously have viewed the island as requiring an additional European connection.

It could also strengthen Ibiza's position as a destination for luxury travel, nightlife, hotels, restaurants and high-end experiences among US visitors.

United's Biggest International Expansion

The Ibiza route forms part of a much larger expansion announced by United Airlines.

The carrier is adding 10 new international destinations across Europe and Asia, describing the programme as the largest international expansion in its history.

From Newark, United will also launch new services to destinations including Luxembourg City, Marseille, Valencia, Terceira, Ljubljana, Olbia and Catania.

Other new destinations include Okinawa from San Francisco and Toulouse from Washington Dulles.

United says eight of the ten new destinations will have no nonstop service from another US airline.

The New A321XLR

The Ibiza route is also significant because it will be operated with United's new Airbus A321XLR "Born to Explore."

The aircraft is designed to combine the efficiency of a single-aisle aircraft with the range required for longer international routes.

United says its configuration will include 20 United Polaris suites, 12 United Premium Plus seats and Economy Plus seating, alongside features such as Starlink Wi-Fi for MileagePlus members and 4K OLED seatback screens.

The A321XLR is expected to begin international operations for United in December 2026 before supporting several of the airline's new European routes in summer 2027.

A Second Direct United Connection to the Balearics

The new Ibiza service will not be United's first direct connection between the New York area and the Balearic Islands.

United already operates a Newark–Palma route to Mallorca, which began in 2022 and has seen strong demand. According to Periódico de Ibiza, passenger numbers on that route increased by 30% in 2025.

The addition of Ibiza gives United another direct gateway into the Balearics and could help strengthen the airline's position in the region.

What This Could Mean for Ibiza

For Ibiza, the new route arrives at an interesting moment as the island continues to pursue higher-value tourism while also debating the pressures created by rising visitor numbers, accommodation costs and infrastructure demands.

A direct New York connection could bring more American visitors, greater visibility and potentially higher-value tourism spending without requiring travellers to make a European connection.

The challenge for Ibiza will be balancing that new international demand with the island's wider efforts to manage tourism sustainably.

For now, one thing is clear: from May 31, 2027, getting from New York to Ibiza will be considerably easier.

Four weekly flights. No European connection. One historic new link between Ibiza and the United States.
