A 48-year-old man has died after suffering severe burns in a fire at a precarious dwelling in the Casa Lola settlement in Sant Josep de sa Talaia, Ibiza.

The fire broke out during the early hours of Sunday, September 27, in the Camí des Jondals area. The man was found with burns covering around 90% of his body and was transferred in critical condition to Can Misses Hospital, where he later died.

Fire reported shortly after 7:00

The SAMU 061 emergency coordination centre received the alert at around 07:10 on Sunday morning after a fire was reported in the area.

The flames had affected a precarious structure in which the 48-year-old man was present. Emergency medical services sent two ambulances to the scene, including an Advanced Life Support unit and a Basic Life Support unit.

Firefighters from the Ibiza Island Fire Service also attended with six personnel and two vehicles.

Man transferred to Can Misses

Medical teams treated and stabilised the injured man at the scene before transferring him to Can Misses Hospital.

He arrived at around 09:07 and was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit in critical condition with a diagnosis of severe burns.

The Guardia Civil reported that approximately 90% of his body had suffered burns.

Death confirmed on Sunday afternoon

Despite efforts by medical staff, the man died shortly after 17:00 on Sunday at Can Misses.

The Ibiza and Formentera Health Area confirmed his death and expressed its condolences to his family and those close to him.

Fire brought under control

Firefighters worked to extinguish the blaze after arriving at the site early on Sunday morning.

The fire affected the precarious dwelling and nearby vegetation. The exact extent of the area affected has been reported differently, so no larger figure is given here beyond the approximately 60 square metres cited in local reporting.

Guardia Civil investigates

The Guardia Civil has opened an investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.

At this stage, there is no confirmed public explanation for how the fire started.

The response involved the Ibiza Island Fire Service, SAMU 061, the Guardia Civil and the Sant Josep Local Police.

The medical teams' priority was to stabilise the injured man before transporting him to hospital because of the extent and seriousness of his burns.
