Ibiza Salt Fair 2026 Celebrates 2,500 Years of Salt-Making History with Three Days of Free Events

October 15, 2026

Ibiza’s historic salt-making tradition returns to the spotlight from Friday, 16 October, to Sunday, 18 October 2026, as the 10th Fira de la Sal brings three days of cultural activities, traditional food, family workshops and demonstrations to Sant Jordi de ses Salines and the Ses Salines Natural Park.

Organised by Sant Josep Town Hall, the annual fair celebrates the island’s salt heritage and the role the salt industry played in its economic and cultural development for more than 2,500 years.

This tenth-anniversary edition combines historical experiences with activities for all ages. Highlights include demonstrations of traditional salt harvesting, an artisan market, live music, traditional Ibizan dancing, theatrical visits, culinary demonstrations and a new mini-conference exploring the history of salt production.

Admission to the fair’s activities is free.

Friday, October 16: Exploring the History of Ibiza’s Salt Industry

The opening day begins with activities in Sant Jordi, including a programme for older residents of the municipality from 09:00 to 15:00, organised through Social Services and requiring prior registration.

At 17:00, the multipurpose room in Sant Jordi will host a recording of the Onda Agraria radio programme.

The main cultural highlight follows at 18:30 with Sal de la tierra y sal del mar, a mini-conference exploring the history of salt production. The session features historian Antoni Ferrer Abárzuza and doctor Andreu Galera, with the collaboration of Salinera Española and participation from José Miguel Marí.

The addition of this conference gives the anniversary edition a stronger historical focus, helping visitors understand the development of salt production and its influence on the island.

Saturday, October 17: Artisan Market, Workshops and Traditional Food

Saturday brings a full programme of activities to Sant Jordi, combining local crafts, family entertainment, gastronomy and traditional celebrations.

The artisan market will run from 10:00 to 17:00 in Plaça de Sant Jordi. Throughout the morning, visitors can also take part in creative workshops, including Felicitacions marines de sal, a marine-themed salt activity for children, and Modela la plastisal, a modelling workshop. Both are scheduled from 10:30 to 12:30.

A painting workshop titled Amb sal i textures, designed for participants aged 16 and over, will also take place from 10:30 to 12:30. From 10:30 to 16:00, Irene Apolo will lead a workshop on creating aromatic salts.

Food and local products will feature prominently between 11:00 and 14:00, with tastings and demonstrations connected to the island’s culinary traditions.

At midday, the winners of the Salipinta drawing competition will be announced, with an exhibition of the selected works at the porch of Sant Jordi Church. A photographic attraction, the Mirall Saliner, is scheduled from 12:00 to 14:00.

At 12:15, the new fair guardians, Xicu and Jordi, will take part in a festive procession. The characters are part of the event’s efforts to make Ibiza’s salt heritage engaging for younger visitors.

Traditional cuisine and live music

From 12:45 to 14:00, the programme includes culinary demonstrations and a popular meal featuring ossos amb col, a traditional Ibizan dish. The meal is listed at €5 per portion.

Live music follows from 14:00 to 16:00 with MAIK & REYA.

In the early evening, a theatrical storytelling session, Es Fameliar Ximpum i el misteri de ses Salines, is scheduled for 18:00 to 19:00.

The day then returns to local religious and cultural traditions with the Salpassa at 19:30, followed by a solemn Mass at Sant Jordi Church at 20:00.

Sunday, October 18: Discover the Ses Salines Natural Park

Sunday’s programme moves beyond the village and into the Ses Salines Natural Park, with activities organised across several designated areas.

The day begins at the Zona 0 meeting area near the DC10 car park. Visitors can collect their salt-themed kits and continue into the park using the event’s transport arrangements. Shuttle minibuses and a festive train are listed, with bicycles also available while supplies last.

The activities are spread across different locations, allowing visitors to discover the area’s natural environment, historical sites and traditional salt-production methods.

Zona 1: Sant Francesc Interpretation Centre

From 10:00 to 15:00, visitors can explore the documentary Relats de Sal and the exhibition Sa Sal. Imatges d’abans, featuring work by Bernat Tur Llorens.

Birdwatching activities at Toromar are also planned until 13:00, offering a chance to learn about the wildlife of the protected wetlands.

Zona 2: Torre de la Sal Rossa and La Xanga

The programme includes theatrical visits to Torre de la Sal Rossa at 10:00, 10:30 and 11:00, under the title El valent vigilant de la torre.

From 10:00 to 11:00, archaeologists Ricard Marlasca and Josep Maria López Garí will lead a guided visit to the salt-production complex at La Xanga.

Information tables will run from 10:00 to 14:00, covering salt formation, the history of the industry, traditional tools and the biodiversity of the area.

Zona 3: Traditional salt-worker ceremonies

At the former salt mound in the Pantà area, the programme includes a traditional ball pagès performance by the Sant Jordi Folkloric Group at 12:00.

The event also features a meeting with the fair’s guardians, followed at 12:15 by the lighting of the traditional Fogueró, accompanied by songs performed by Petit Cor.

Historically, the fire served as a signal associated with calling workers to the salt flats. Its return to the programme helps preserve the traditions surrounding the island’s salt industry.

Zona 4: Traditional salt harvesting

At 13:00, visitors can watch a demonstration of traditional salt extraction, presented by Miquel Vingut with explanations from historian Antoni Ferrer Abárzuza.

The programme also includes a salt-worker song by Josep Ferrer Marí and the Escola de Petits Saliners, where children can learn about the trade and receive a diploma at the end of the activity.

These demonstrations offer a practical look at the techniques that sustained Ibiza’s historic salt industry and shaped the landscape of Ses Salines.

A Family-Friendly Celebration of Ibiza’s Heritage

The Fira de la Sal connects local history with the natural environment, bringing together traditional skills, gastronomy, crafts and cultural performances.

For families, Saturday’s creative workshops and Sunday’s Escola de Petits Saliners provide opportunities for children to engage directly with the island’s heritage. Visitors interested in history can explore the conference, exhibitions and archaeological visits, while food and culture enthusiasts can enjoy traditional dishes, music and folklore.

The event also highlights the environmental importance of Ses Salines, an area where the historic salt industry and protected natural habitats exist side by side.
