The Es Amunts Interpretation Centre will host the second edition of its conference dedicated to non-native species on Saturday, 14 November 2026, offering visitors an opportunity to learn more about how introduced plants and animals can affect Ibiza's natural environment.
The II Jornada de Especies Alóctonas des Amunts will combine an educational presentation, an outdoor observation walk and a practical examination of biological samples. The free activity aims to increase awareness of non-native species, their routes of introduction and their potential impact on the island's ecosystems.
Understanding the Impact of Non-Native Species
The morning programme will begin with a theoretical introduction explaining the different classifications of non-native species and the ways they arrive in new environments.
Participants will learn about the various routes through which these species can be introduced, their strategies for spreading and the potential consequences for local biodiversity.
The session will also explore how introduced species interact with existing ecosystems and why understanding their presence is important for the conservation of Ibiza's natural environment.
Not all non-native species are necessarily invasive. However, some can spread and establish themselves in ways that affect native plants, animals and habitats, making monitoring and environmental awareness important elements of conservation work.
Outdoor Walk and Practical Observation
Following the introductory presentation, participants will take a short walk around the surroundings of the Es Amunts Interpretation Centre.
The walk will provide an opportunity to observe examples of non-native species in their natural surroundings, particularly introduced plant species.
The practical component will continue inside the centre, where attendees will examine different samples using a binocular magnifying glass.
This hands-on activity will allow participants to look more closely at the characteristics of the specimens and complement the information covered during the theoretical presentation.
Discover the Natural Heritage of Es Amunts
Located in the north of Ibiza, the Es Amunts area is recognised for its ecological and environmental importance. Its landscape includes pine and juniper forests, agricultural valleys, cliffs and habitats supporting a variety of native and protected species.
The Es Amunts Interpretation Centre in Sant Llorenç de Balàfia serves as an educational gateway to this natural area, helping visitors understand its biodiversity, traditional rural heritage and conservation challenges.
Activities such as the non-native species conference provide an opportunity to connect environmental education with direct observation of the island's natural surroundings.
