The planned new health centre in Formentera will cost an estimated €4.49 million after the Balearic Islands Government approved an updated construction budget, an increase of almost €1.5 million compared with the €3 million initially announced.
The Consell de Govern authorised the revised budget on Friday, 9 October 2026, bringing the planned expenditure to €4,485,322. The increase of €1,485,322 represents a rise of 49.5% over the original estimate.
According to the regional government, the budget has been updated to comply with Decree-Law 1/2026, adopted on 1 April to introduce extraordinary and urgent measures intended to mitigate the economic crisis associated with the war in the Middle East.
New Centre to Be Built Beside Formentera Hospital
The new health centre will be located alongside Formentera Hospital, with an internal connection between the two facilities. The project combines 500 square metres of new construction with the renovation of a further 250 square metres of existing space.
The planned facility will include 15 consultation rooms serving family and community medicine, nursing, paediatrics, obstetric and gynaecological nursing, social work and dental health.
Other planned facilities include a sample-collection room, storage space, an admissions area and a room for healthcare staff.
The centre is designed to serve a population of approximately 15,000 people, taking into account the island's expected demographic growth.
Budget Update Follows Earlier €3 Million Estimate
In December 2025, the Balearic Islands Health Service announced an initial investment of €3 million for the project, alongside the award of the contract to prepare the architectural plans and provide construction supervision.
In July 2026, the regional government authorised the tendering of the construction contract, with an estimated value of approximately €4.34 million. The latest decision updates the budget to €4.49 million.
The figures refer to different stages of the project's development and should not be confused with the cost of a completed building. The latest authorisation concerns the revised budget and the contracting of the works.
A Planned Investment in Formentera’s Healthcare
The new centre forms part of the Balearic Islands Health Service's 2024-2027 healthcare investment plan.
Its location beside Formentera Hospital is intended to improve coordination between primary and hospital care while providing additional space for consultations and other healthcare services.
The latest budget approval marks another step in the project's administrative development. The centre has not yet opened, and its construction and completion remain dependent on the subsequent contracting and execution of the works.
