Balearic Islands Record Spain’s Highest Rate of Gender Violence Victims Who Report to Court, With 23 Complaints a Day

23 de October de 2026

The Balearic Islands recorded 2,098 complaints of gender-based violence during the second quarter of 2026, equivalent to an average of 23 a day, according to figures released by Spain’s General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ).

The total, covering April to June, was 11.7% higher than the 1,878 complaints recorded during the same period in 2025. The figures also identified 1,846 women as victims of gender-based violence in the archipelago, an increase of 8.1% compared with the 1,707 recorded a year earlier.

The data were published by the CGPJ’s Observatory against Domestic and Gender Violence on Friday, 23 October. They place the Balearic Islands at the top of the national ranking for the rate of women victims who report gender-based violence to the authorities.

Highest rate of reporting victims in Spain

The Balearic Islands recorded 29.4 women victims who reported gender-based violence per 10,000 women during the second quarter. This was above the national average of 20 per 10,000 and higher than the archipelago’s rate of 27.6 during the same period in 2025.

The rate refers to women recorded as victims who reported cases through the judicial system. It should not be interpreted as a measure of all gender-based violence, including incidents that are never reported.

The number of complaints and the number of women identified as victims are separate measures. Complaints may not correspond one-to-one with individual victims, so the two totals should not be treated as interchangeable.

273 women declined to testify against the accused

The CGPJ figures show that 273 women recorded as victims in the Balearic Islands exercised the legal right, where applicable, not to testify against the alleged perpetrator. This represented 14.8% of the women victims recorded during the quarter.

The number was 18% lower than in the second quarter of 2025.

The legal provision allows victims to decline to testify in circumstances established by law. The figures alone do not explain the reasons behind individual decisions.

Protection orders fall compared with 2025

Judicial bodies in the Balearic Islands received 408 applications for protection orders between April and June 2026, a decrease of 2.8% year on year.

A total of 318 orders were granted, down 5.1% from the same quarter in 2025. The orders granted represented 78% of the applications received.

The rate of protection orders granted was 22.1 per 100 women victims recorded during the quarter.

These figures measure applications and orders granted during the reporting period. They do not establish whether every victim who needed protection applied for an order or received one.

What the latest figures show

The second-quarter statistics show increases in both complaints and the number of women recorded as victims of gender-based violence in the Balearic Islands, alongside a decline in protection-order applications and orders granted compared with the previous year.

The figures provide a snapshot of cases reaching the judicial system from April to June 2026. They do not represent a complete count of all incidents of gender-based violence across the islands, nor do they by themselves explain the reasons for the year-on-year changes.

The CGPJ’s quarterly reporting provides a basis for tracking reported cases and the use of judicial protection measures over time.
