Italy has formally inaugurated the new premises of its Honorary Vice-Consulate in Ibiza, strengthening consular services for Italian citizens living on Ibiza and Formentera.

Italian Ambassador to Spain Giuseppe Buccino Grimaldi travelled to the Balearic Islands from September 16 to 18 for a programme of institutional and consular meetings. During the visit, he attended the formal inauguration of the Ibiza office alongside Honorary Vice-Consul Rossana Alvaro.

A renewed Italian consular presence in Ibiza

The ceremony marks an important step in the restoration of Italy's consular presence on the island.

The Honorary Vice-Consulate in Ibiza officially reopened on May 18, 2026, allowing Italian citizens resident in Ibiza and Formentera to access a range of consular services locally.

The office now operates from Paseo Vara del Rey 22 in Ibiza and is headed by Rossana Alvaro, who was appointed Honorary Vice-Consul for Ibiza and Formentera.

Services for Italian citizens

The Ibiza office is part of Italy's wider honorary consular network and is intended to make consular procedures more accessible to Italians living on the Pitiusan islands.

Among its assigned responsibilities is the processing of requests for Italian passports, alongside other consular services within the office's remit.

The current public opening schedule is Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 14:00 to 18:00, with appointments required.

A growing Italian community in the Balearics

The renewed consular presence comes as the Italian community in the Balearic Islands continues to expand.

According to figures cited during the ambassador's visit, more than 25,000 Italian nationals are permanent residents across the archipelago. ANSA reports that the community has grown by approximately 35% over the past two years.

The Italian presence extends across a wide range of economic activities, including tourism and catering, real estate, construction, yachting, fashion, design, retail, events and music.

Italian shipping companies including Grimaldi, MSC and Costa Cruises also have a presence in the islands, while yacht manufacturer Sanlorenzo operates a sales office in Portals.

Ambassador meets Balearic institutions

During his three-day mission, Buccino Grimaldi also held meetings with the President of the Balearic Parliament, Gabriel Antonio Le Senne Presedo, and the Mayor of Palma de Mallorca, Jaime Martínez Llabrés.

The meetings focused on relations between Italy and the Balearic Islands and the increasingly close economic, professional and cultural links between the two countries.

According to ANSA, the ambassador and the officials discussed the role of the Balearics as a hub for interaction between Italy and Spain, with Italian companies and professionals playing an increasingly visible role in the regional economy.

Three Italian consular offices now operating in the Balearics

The Ibiza inauguration formed part of a wider expansion of Italy's honorary consular network in the Balearic Islands.

During the same mission, the ambassador attended the inauguration of the Honorary Consulate in Palma de Mallorca and the Honorary Vice-Consulate in Es Castell, Menorca.

The opening of the Menorca office brings the number of fully operational Italian consular offices in the Balearic Islands to three: Palma de Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza.

The Ibiza office has jurisdiction over both Ibiza and Formentera.

For Italian residents on the Pitiusan islands, maintaining consular services locally can reduce the need to travel to other Spanish cities for procedures handled by the Italian diplomatic network.
