Can Ventosa Expansion Works Force Ibiza Library to Close From September 8 to 16

September 08, 2026

The Municipal Library of Can Ventosa in Ibiza Town will temporarily close from Tuesday, September 8, through Wednesday, September 16, inclusive, because of ongoing expansion works at the building.

Ibiza Town Hall says the temporary closure is necessary for occupational health and safety reasons while construction activity continues inside and around the building.

The works have now reached a more advanced stage, with the building visibly gaining height and a large construction crane operating continuously around the site. The movement of people in the area therefore needs to be controlled during this phase of the project.

Nine Days of Temporary Closure

The library will be closed to the public for nine days, from September 8 through September 16.

During this period, library users will have an alternative facility at the Can Botino Library in Dalt Vila.

Can Botino is also home to the Historical Archive of Ibiza and Formentera and will remain open Monday to Friday from 9:00am to 8:00pm without interruption while Can Ventosa is closed.

The temporary arrangement is intended to ensure that residents can continue accessing library services despite the construction work.

Can Botino Becomes the Main Alternative

Visitors who normally use Can Ventosa will be able to use Can Botino during the closure.

However, some regular users have already expressed concerns about accessibility, with two library users telling Noudiari that they would prefer to use the Insular Public Library in Cas Serres because they consider Can Botino less accessible.

The comments reflect the practical impact that even a temporary closure can have on people who rely on a particular library location.

Books Can Still Be Returned

People who have books currently on loan from Can Ventosa do not need to wait until the library reopens to return them.

The Town Hall says books can be deposited in the external return box located outside the Can Ventosa Library on Pere Francès Street.

Users can therefore continue returning borrowed material while the building itself remains closed.

Digital Services Remain Available

The temporary closure will not affect the library's digital services.

Users can continue accessing Digitalia Català and Digitalia, allowing them to read and use digital library resources during the closure period.

For questions regarding the temporary closure or other library-related matters, the Town Hall has also provided an email contact service.

A Major Expansion of Can Ventosa

The temporary library closure is directly connected to a much larger project at Can Ventosa.

The expansion works have been underway for several months following approval by Ibiza Town Hall at the end of 2025.

The project has a budget of €2.7 million and forms part of the city's strategic action plan aimed at modernising Ibiza.

One of the most significant changes will be the expansion of the space dedicated to musical activities.

Music Facilities to Quadruple in Size

The expansion will increase the area available to the Patronato de Música from approximately 300 square metres to more than 1,200 square metres.

That represents roughly four times the existing space dedicated to music education and activities.

The expansion will be achieved through the addition of two further floors to the building.

The project is expected to significantly increase the capacity of the facility and provide new spaces for students, teachers and musicians.

New Classrooms and Rehearsal Spaces

The third floor will include six new classrooms, two practice booths, offices for management and administration, a teachers' room and new service areas.

The fourth floor will contain another four classrooms together with a large rehearsal room capable of accommodating more than 100 musicians.

The additional facilities are designed to address the existing limitations of the building and provide substantially more space for musical training and rehearsals.

A Historic Building Undergoing Major Changes

Can Ventosa has a long history in Ibiza Town.

The building marked its 100th anniversary in 2025, making the current expansion particularly significant in the context of its history.

The renovation and extension are intended to give the building a much larger functional capacity while retaining its role as an important cultural and educational facility in the city.

The expansion therefore combines the modernisation of existing infrastructure with the creation of entirely new spaces.

Construction Is Now Clearly Visible

The latest stage of the works is increasingly visible from outside the building.

The structure has already gained additional height, while the large crane installed at the site remains in constant operation.

That construction activity is the immediate reason the library needs to temporarily close.

The Town Hall's decision is focused on protecting users and workers during a particularly active phase of construction rather than indicating any permanent change to the library's future.

A Temporary Disruption for a Long-Term Project

For regular Can Ventosa users, the closure means a short-term disruption.

For the city, however, the expansion represents a larger investment in cultural infrastructure.

The increase in music facilities is expected to provide additional capacity for lessons, rehearsals and administrative work, while the expanded building will become significantly larger than its current configuration.

The temporary closure is therefore part of the wider process of transforming one of Ibiza Town's historic cultural buildings.

Library Services Return After September 16

The current closure is scheduled to end on September 16.

Assuming the construction programme proceeds as planned, the Municipal Library of Can Ventosa will resume normal public service after that date.

Until then, residents can use Can Botino, return books through the external mailbox at Can Ventosa and continue using the available digital services.

The works themselves will continue beyond the library closure as the broader expansion project progresses.
