Formentera Hospital Resumes Scheduled Operations After 16-Day Suspension Caused by Water Leaks

05. November 2026

The Hospital de Formentera has resumed scheduled surgical operations after a 16-day suspension caused by water leaks following the heavy rainfall associated with DANA Adam in October. The operating theatre returned to normal scheduled activity on Wednesday 4 November 2026, after microbiological tests confirmed that the affected area met the necessary sanitary conditions.

The suspension began on 19 October as a precautionary measure to protect patients and healthcare professionals. During this period, urgent and emergency surgical procedures continued, but nine non-urgent operations had to be postponed and will be rescheduled over the coming days.

The decision to reopen the surgical area followed recommendations from the Preventive Medicine Service at Son Espases University Hospital in Mallorca, after laboratory results from samples collected on 23 October confirmed that the necessary conditions had been restored.

Microbiological tests clear the way for reopening

Following the water leaks, the hospital carried out cleaning and disinfection work in the affected areas before collecting samples for microbiological analysis.

The results confirmed that the surgical area met the required health and safety conditions, allowing scheduled operations to resume.

The process was supervised in accordance with the recommendations of the Preventive Medicine Service at Son Espases University Hospital, which had been involved in assessing the conditions of the facilities.

The temporary suspension was introduced to ensure that surgical procedures could take place under appropriate sanitary conditions while the necessary inspections and corrective work were completed.

Nine non-urgent operations postponed

During the suspension, nine non-urgent surgical procedures were affected. According to the Ibiza and Formentera Health Area, these operations will be reorganised and carried out in the days following the reopening.

Urgent and emergency surgery remained available throughout the interruption. The operating theatre itself had not suffered direct damage from the water leaks, which primarily affected areas outside the operating room.

The hospital also maintained its emergency care responsibilities during the period of restricted scheduled activity.

New leaks following repairs carried out after the 2025 storm

The latest incident has renewed attention on the condition of the hospital's surgical facilities.

The Ibiza and Formentera Health Area reported that more than 200 improvement actions had been carried out in the surgical block since the DANA that affected the islands in October 2025.

Many of these interventions were intended to improve the installations and prevent water from entering during episodes of exceptionally heavy rainfall.

However, the leaks recorded in October 2026 occurred in different areas from those addressed during the previous repairs. The new incident therefore highlighted the continuing challenges of protecting the facilities against extreme weather conditions.

The latest improvement works have been intended to address these vulnerabilities, although the return of scheduled operations does not, by itself, establish that all possible future water-ingress problems have been permanently resolved.

Hospital reports one of the shortest surgical waiting times in the Balearic Islands

Despite the temporary restriction on scheduled surgery, the Ibiza and Formentera Health Area reported that the Hospital de Formentera had an average surgical waiting time of 67.2 days in the latest figures it cited.

The corresponding average across the Balearic Islands was 92.5 days.

These figures were presented by the health authority as evidence that Formentera had the shortest average surgical waiting time among public hospitals in the region. They relate to the waiting-list snapshot reported at the time and should not be confused with the duration of the recent suspension.

Scheduled surgical activity returns

The resumption of scheduled operations on 4 November marks the end of the latest preventive interruption at the Hospital de Formentera.

The nine postponed procedures are expected to be reorganised over the following days, while urgent surgical care remained operational throughout the suspension.

The incident nevertheless highlights the importance of maintaining and improving the hospital's infrastructure, particularly in the face of increasingly disruptive episodes of heavy rainfall.
