The Ancient Towers Hiding Around Ibiza: A Free History Lesson by the Sea

Published on September 11, 2026 at 04:01 PM

Scattered around Ibiza's coastline are stone towers that can look almost like part of the landscape.

Some sit dramatically above the sea. Others are surrounded by pine trees or countryside. From a distance, they might simply look like old stone buildings.

But these towers have a story.

Long before Ibiza became an international holiday destination, the island's coastline had to be protected from attacks by sea. A network of defensive towers was built to watch the horizon, identify approaching ships and warn communities when danger was coming.

Today, many of these historic structures can be discovered without paying an entrance fee, making them one of the most interesting free things to do in Ibiza.

Why Were Ibiza's Towers Built?

Ibiza's position in the Mediterranean made it strategically important, but it also left coastal communities vulnerable to attacks from the sea.

For centuries, people living around the island needed a way to spot danger before it reached the shore.

The watchtowers provided an elevated position from which guards could observe the surrounding coastline and sea. If an approaching vessel appeared suspicious, warnings could be communicated to other towers and settlements.

What looks like a peaceful viewpoint today was once part of a sophisticated early-warning system.

The Towers Were Designed to Communicate

One of the most fascinating things about Ibiza's watchtowers is that they were not isolated structures.

Their locations were carefully chosen so that towers could communicate with one another. Visual signals could be used to alert neighbouring towers and communities.

This meant that news of danger could travel along the coastline much faster than it would have been possible for people on foot.

Imagine standing on one of these towers centuries ago, watching the horizon and knowing that your view could determine how quickly an entire community responded to a threat.

Torre des Savinar

One of the island's most famous defensive towers is Torre des Savinar, dramatically positioned above the coastline near the area of Es Vedrà.

Its location makes it particularly spectacular.

The tower sits high above the sea, with enormous views across the surrounding landscape. From here, the Mediterranean stretches out in front of you and the distinctive silhouette of Es Vedrà dominates the horizon.

The surrounding area is also beautiful enough to make the walk worthwhile even if you're primarily interested in photography rather than history.

Torre de Ses Portes

At the southern end of the island, near the Ses Salines area, stands another historic coastal tower.

Torre de Ses Portes occupies a striking position overlooking the sea and the passage between Ibiza and Formentera.

The walk through the surrounding landscape adds another dimension to the experience. Salt flats, Mediterranean vegetation and open coastal scenery make this part of the island feel very different from Ibiza's developed areas.

The tower is a reminder of how important the surrounding waters once were for both trade and defence.

Torre de Balansat

In the north of Ibiza, Torre de Balansat stands above the coastline near the Port de Sant Miquel area.

Its elevated position offered an excellent view of the sea and surrounding coast.

Today, the setting makes it an interesting destination for anyone exploring northern Ibiza, particularly if you enjoy combining history with nature.

The journey to historic sites like this is often just as rewarding as the structure itself.

Torre de Portinatx

The northern coastline around Portinatx also contains remnants of Ibiza's defensive history.

The rugged landscape makes it easy to understand why elevated coastal positions were so valuable. From above, you can see how much of the surrounding coastline is exposed to the open sea.

Today, the same elevated views attract photographers, walkers and visitors looking for quieter experiences.

Look Beyond the Tower

The towers themselves are fascinating, but don't make the mistake of visiting only for the building.

Their locations tell an equally important story.

Look at the coastline. Notice the visibility across the sea. Think about why someone centuries ago would have chosen that particular hill or cliff.

Once you understand the defensive purpose of the towers, the landscape starts making much more sense.

You're no longer simply looking at a beautiful viewpoint. You're standing inside a historic network designed around the geography of Ibiza.

The Views Are Completely Free

One of the best things about discovering Ibiza's historic towers is that the surrounding scenery doesn't cost anything.

You can stand above the Mediterranean, watch boats moving across the horizon and see the coastline stretching into the distance.

On a clear day, you may also be able to see Formentera from some southern viewpoints.

It is history with an extraordinary backdrop.

Combine History With a Walk

Many of the towers are located away from major roads, meaning reaching them can involve walking.

This makes them ideal for combining several free experiences into one day.

You can explore a coastal path, discover Mediterranean vegetation, stop at a viewpoint and finish at a historic tower.

Instead of paying for an organised excursion, you're creating your own adventure.

Just make sure you research the route beforehand, wear suitable footwear and carry enough water.

Don't Climb Where You Shouldn't

The towers are historic structures, and not every part of every site is necessarily accessible.

Don't climb walls, enter restricted areas or attempt to access unstable structures simply for a photograph.

The goal is to appreciate the history, not become part of it.

Some of the best photographs can be taken from the surrounding landscape anyway.

A Different Way to See Ibiza

The watchtowers reveal something important about the island.

Ibiza's beauty isn't only about beaches and sunsets. Its landscape has shaped the way people lived here for centuries.

The cliffs, hills, bays and open sea weren't simply scenery. They influenced where people settled, how they travelled and how they defended themselves.

Once you start discovering the towers, you may begin noticing Ibiza's geography in a completely different way.

Your Free History Tour Is Waiting

You could spend an afternoon in Ibiza looking for the perfect beach spot.

Or you could follow an old path towards a centuries-old tower, stand above the Mediterranean and imagine the people who once watched these same waters for signs of approaching ships.

The scenery is free.

The history is free.

And the experience is something you'll remember long after your holiday is over.
