Spanish Influencer Goes Viral After Changing Her Euros to Dollars Before Travelling to Ibiza

September 12, 2026

Spanish influencer and TikTok creator Shannis has gone viral after recounting an unusual mistake she made before travelling to Ibiza: she changed all the euros she was carrying into US dollars because she did not realise the island was part of Spain.

The Sevillian creator shared the anecdote during an appearance on El Sótano Club, a programme broadcast on TEN and YouTube, where a conversation about travelling to Paris eventually turned to her previous trip to Ibiza.

An Unexpected Currency Mix-Up

Shannis explained that before travelling to Ibiza, she went to an airport exchange office and converted all the euros she had into dollars.

Her reasoning was based on the impression that Ibiza was an island far out in the Mediterranean and that she would therefore need a different currency.

The mistake only became clear once she arrived.

When she attempted to pay for something in Ibiza and saw that prices were listed in euros, she realised that she had made the wrong assumption. She then had to exchange the dollars back into euros during her stay.

“I Didn't Know Ibiza Was Spain”

The story came up during a discussion that had already produced another moment of geographical confusion.

Shannis had been talking about Paris and explained that she had never travelled there because she did not have a passport. When Alba Carrillo pointed out that a passport is not required for travel to Paris within the European Union, the conversation took an unexpected turn.

Shannis then recalled her Ibiza trip and admitted that she had not realised Ibiza was Spanish territory.

She said she eventually discovered the answer after noticing that the euro was being used across the island.

The Airport Exchange Made the Mistake More Expensive

The decision to exchange her money before the trip potentially made the misunderstanding more costly.

Because the original conversion was carried out at an airport, programme presenter Alba Carrillo immediately joked about the commission that could have been charged on the transaction.

Shannis then explained that, after arriving in Ibiza, she had to reverse the operation and exchange the money back into euros.

The exact amount she lost through the two currency exchanges was not given.

Who Is Shannis?

Shannis has built a significant audience on social media, particularly among younger Spanish users.

According to La Voz de Ibiza, she has more than 654,000 followers on TikTok and over 147,000 on Instagram. She has also appeared alongside figures including Samantha Hudson and Lucía La Puerta and has developed a career in music, releasing her own material in 2024.

Her appearance on El Sótano Club has now given her Ibiza story a second life online, with clips of the conversation spreading across social media.

A Very Ibiza Viral Moment

The story has attracted attention because the mistake is so unusual, particularly coming from a Spanish traveller visiting a Spanish island.

Ibiza is part of the Balearic Islands, an autonomous community of Spain, and the euro is its official currency.

For Shannis, however, those basic geographical details apparently only became clear after she arrived and tried to spend the money she had brought with her.

The anecdote has since become one of the more unexpected Ibiza-related viral moments of September, turning a simple currency exchange into an internet geography lesson.
