Ibiza’s campaign against illegal passenger transport has continued with the immobilisation of a van and a proposed €15,000 sanction after police detected an irregular VTC operation in the city.

The intervention took place during a special traffic and vehicle-control operation carried out by the Ibiza Local Police, targeting VTC vehicles and other potential irregularities on the island.

Van Removed During VTC Control

According to information released by Ibiza City Council, officers detected a van allegedly carrying out passenger transport without the required authorisation.

The vehicle was reported for illegal activity, immobilised and removed from the road. A €15,000 fine was imposed for what the authorities classify as transport-sector intrusion.

The case forms part of the wider crackdown on unlicensed passenger services, including so-called pirate taxis and VTC vehicles operating outside the conditions of their authorisations.

62 Vehicles Inspected

The latest operation was carried out in two stages.

In the first, Local Police officers worked alongside mobility inspectors from the Consell de Ibiza. Three control points were established at strategic locations around the city, including the Joan Carles I promenade and Marina Botafoc area, Avenida de Santa Eulària and the intersection near Podencos, and Calle Fra Luis de León and Avenida Pere Matutes Noguera.

A total of 62 vehicles were inspected.

The operation resulted in 16 reported offences, including one related to drugs, one for drink-driving and 12 for failing to use seat belts. Inspectors from the Consell also issued two reports connected with authorisations for entering and circulating on the island.

Police additionally opened criminal proceedings over an alleged road-safety offence after a driver was found to have exceeded the permitted alcohol limit.

Further VTC Checks in Ibiza

A second operation was carried out from Friday night into Saturday, this time entirely by the Local Police.

Officers established a specific VTC checkpoint on the Joan Carles I promenade while also checking compliance with seat-belt and restraint requirements.

Alongside the immobilised van and €15,000 transport sanction, three further seat-belt offences were reported and paid on the spot, totalling €300.

Pressure on Illegal Passenger Transport

The latest action underlines the continued pressure being placed on unlicensed passenger transport in Ibiza, particularly during the busy summer season.

Authorities on the island have increased inspections at key areas used by tourists, including the airport and major nightlife and hotel zones, where illegal passenger services have historically been a recurring problem.

Earlier this summer, the Guardia Civil reported that 14 vehicles involved in irregular passenger transport had already been intercepted in Ibiza, with drivers facing significant administrative penalties and, in cases involving passengers, the immediate removal of the vehicle.

Authorities Continue to Target Intrusismo

The Consell de Ibiza and the island's municipalities have repeatedly warned that operating passenger transport without the necessary licence or authorisation can result in substantial financial penalties.

The objective is not only to protect the legal taxi and VTC sector from unfair competition, but also to ensure that passengers use properly authorised services that meet the relevant requirements for safety, insurance and professional operation.

The latest €15,000 sanction therefore forms part of a broader enforcement campaign that authorities say will continue across Ibiza.
