A doctor at Sant Antoni Health Centre in Ibiza has reported an alleged incident of verbal aggression and threats by a patient, saying she was forced to hide outside her consultation room because she feared for her safety.
The incident, reported on 6 November 2026 by Periódico de Ibiza y Formentera, required the intervention of the Guardia Civil after the patient allegedly began shouting and making threats inside the healthcare facility.
According to a written account submitted by the doctor to the newspaper, the situation continued until officers arrived. The man was eventually accompanied outside the premises, but reportedly returned afterwards to photograph the doctor's consultation room.
The reasons for taking the photographs have not been established.
Patient had requested a referral to Psychiatry
According to the doctor's account, the man's reason for attending the health centre was to request a referral to the Psychiatry Department.
The doctor stressed that the circumstances of the visit did not justify the alleged behaviour, including the shouting, threats and fear experienced by the healthcare professional.
She described the situation as unacceptable and said that no healthcare worker should have to hide to protect themselves while carrying out their professional duties.
The incident has been reported to the Guardia Civil, according to the doctor.
Doctor raises concerns over security arrangements
The healthcare professional also questioned the absence of an on-site security service capable of responding immediately when an incident occurs.
She argued that the safety of medical staff should not depend on the time it takes for the Guardia Civil to arrive and called on healthcare authorities and the relevant institutions to introduce urgent measures to protect workers at Sant Antoni Health Centre.
Her concerns come amid previous incidents involving healthcare personnel at the same facility.
Previous incidents at Sant Antoni Health Centre
In July 2026, a patient was arrested following an incident in which a doctor was kicked, a nurse was spat at and members of the 061 emergency medical team were also reportedly assaulted.
The incident was confirmed by the Ibiza and Formentera Health Area, which condemned the violence and offered support to the affected professionals. The centre's security personnel played a role in containing the situation before the Guardia Civil arrested the man.
A separate confrontation was reported in September, involving a patient and healthcare workers. That case resulted in complaints from both sides, with the patient and the health authority providing different accounts of what had happened.
These incidents have brought renewed attention to the safety of healthcare professionals working in Ibiza's public health centres.
Seasonal security reinforcements announced in May
In May 2026, the Ibiza and Formentera Health Area announced additional security coverage at several health centres, including Sant Antoni.
Under the arrangements, Sant Antoni was scheduled to have security personnel for 12 hours a day, seven days a week, from 20:00 to 08:00. During July and August, coverage was extended to 24 hours a day.
The seasonal reinforcement was scheduled to continue until the end of October. ASEF also highlighted the availability of panic buttons connected to security services and state security forces.
The doctor involved in the latest reported incident is calling for measures that ensure healthcare workers can receive immediate assistance when threatened.
The case adds to concerns about verbal and physical aggression towards medical staff and the need to provide a safe working environment for those delivering public healthcare in Ibiza.
