The Hospital Can Misses in Ibiza is celebrating a decade of Plantagrama, a music initiative that brings live performances to hospital wards to make patients’ stays more enjoyable and provide a welcome break from their daily routines.
The programme marked its tenth anniversary on Thursday, 8 October 2026, with a performance by Dúo Paco Ibáñez in the hospital’s Internal Medicine ward. Around 30 patients attended the concert, with some joined by relatives and volunteers. The performance also brought together healthcare professionals, with familiar Spanish songs prompting applause and even a few dance steps.
Plantagrama was launched in 2016 as part of efforts to make hospital care more human-centred, particularly for patients whose treatment requires prolonged stays.
A Decade of Music at Can Misses
The initiative was established by Dr Paz Merino, then coordinator of the Patient Safety Unit and head of the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit; Dr Enrique Garcerán, a physician at Can Misses Health Centre and member of the unit; and Maria Costa, coordinator of the Continuous Improvement and Patient Safety Unit.
Since its launch, more than 50 musicians, groups and artists have participated voluntarily, bringing different musical styles to hospital wards and shared spaces.
The programme was designed to help reduce stress and break the monotony that can accompany lengthy hospital admissions. Its performances offer patients opportunities to enjoy music, reconnect with familiar songs and share moments of entertainment with relatives and healthcare staff.
Local and International Artists Have Taken Part
Over the years, Plantagrama has welcomed a wide variety of performers, including Projecte Mut, La Década Prodigiosa, Voicello, Dr. Trapero, Mad Soul, Los Canallas del Guateke, Pitiüsax, Musicaires and Antic Balàfia Ensemble.
Choirs, music students, soloists and other local groups have also contributed, alongside international performers such as violinist Linus Roth, who has participated in the programme on two occasions.
The diversity of artists has allowed patients to experience different musical traditions and genres within the hospital environment.
Dúo Paco Ibáñez Marks the Anniversary
The anniversary concert featured Dúo Paco Ibáñez, with Paco Ibáñez on vocals and guitar and Carlos Antonio also on guitar. The pair performed Spanish songs from different eras in an acoustic format.
It was their second appearance as part of Plantagrama. The anniversary performance was organised with the collaboration of the association Nunca Solos and the Sociedad Concesionaria Gran Hospital Can Misses.
For patients spending days or weeks in hospital, initiatives such as Plantagrama provide an opportunity to step away briefly from the routine of treatment and enjoy a shared cultural experience.
Ten years after its launch, the programme continues to demonstrate how live music can bring moments of connection, entertainment and comfort to patients, their families and the professionals caring for them.
