Ibiza will bring together specialists in art and cultural heritage for the first Jornadas Esphera, a new two-day event dedicated to exploring and promoting the island's historical and artistic heritage.

The inaugural event will take place on Thursday, October 15 and Friday, October 16, 2026 at Sa Peixateria in Ibiza Town.

Organised by the Ajuntament d'Eivissa, the initiative will bring specialists to the island to share knowledge about important elements of Ibiza's cultural heritage and encourage greater awareness of their historical and artistic significance.

A New Cultural Event for Ibiza

The Jornadas Esphera have been created as a meeting point for research, discussion and public engagement with Ibiza's cultural heritage.

Ibiza professor Martí Vila is the driving force behind the initiative.

The project developed from conferences Vila gave last year at the Casino de Ibiza and in the parish of Jesús about the Osona altarpiece, one of the important works within Ibiza's artistic heritage.

Those earlier talks have now developed into a broader cultural programme bringing specialists together for the first Esphera event.

The Osona Altarpiece and Saint Francis of Assisi

The inaugural edition has a particular connection with the Osona altarpiece preserved in the church of Jesús.

The event also coincides with the 800th anniversary of the death of Saint Francis of Assisi, who died in 1226.

His connection with the programme is especially relevant because Saint Francis appears in the central panel of the historic altarpiece in Jesús.

The relationship between the anniversary and the artwork provides one of the historical starting points for the first Esphera Cultural Heritage Days.

Specialists in Medieval Art

Among the specialists confirmed to participate is Joan Molina, head of the European Painting Collection up to 1500 at the Museo Nacional del Prado in Madrid.

Ahead of the Ibiza event, Martí Vila recently joined Molina and a delegation from northern Italy during a private visit to the Prado exhibition "A la manera de Italia. España y el gótico mediterráneo (1320-1430)."

The exhibition explored artistic exchanges between the Iberian and Italian peninsulas during the development of Mediterranean Gothic art.

The visit also provided an opportunity to discuss Ibiza's own medieval artistic heritage.

Ibiza's Gothic Monstrance

During the visit to the Prado, Vila highlighted the Gothic monstrance preserved at the Diocesan Museum of Ibiza Cathedral.

He argued that the piece would have fitted naturally within an exhibition examining Mediterranean Gothic art and artistic exchanges of the period.

Its inclusion in the discussion surrounding Esphera highlights the significance of medieval works that remain preserved on Ibiza and the wider historical connections between the island and the Mediterranean.

Bringing Ibiza's Heritage Into Focus

The purpose of the new event extends beyond individual artworks.

The Jornadas Esphera aim to create a space where Ibiza's historical and artistic assets can be studied, explained and brought closer to the public.

The island is internationally recognised for Dalt Vila and its UNESCO World Heritage status, but Ibiza's cultural heritage also includes religious art, archaeological remains, historic buildings and individual works that tell different parts of its history.

Esphera provides an opportunity to place greater attention on some of those less widely known elements of the island's heritage.

Sa Peixateria Hosts the First Edition

The first Esphera Cultural Heritage Days will be held at Sa Peixateria in La Marina.

Ibiza Town's Councillor for Culture, Carmen Domínguez, has highlighted the choice of the venue as part of the municipality's efforts to bring cultural activity into the historic centre.

The municipality sees the event as both an opportunity to bring recognised specialists to Ibiza and a way of encouraging greater knowledge and appreciation of the island's cultural heritage.

Holding the event in La Marina also places the discussions within one of Ibiza Town's historic neighbourhoods.

October 15 and 16 in Ibiza Town

The inaugural Jornadas Esphera will take place across two days, October 15 and 16, at Sa Peixateria.
