Pothole and Possible Excessive Speed Among Investigative Leads in Fatal Mallorca Rally Crash

October 15, 2026

Investigators are examining whether a road defect and possible excessive speed contributed to the fatal crash that killed Klaus Rader, the German entrepreneur and co-founder of restaurant chain L’Osteria, during the Rally 550 Challenge Mallorca.

Rader, 63, died on Friday, 9 October 2026, after the white Porsche 911 GT3 RS he was driving left the road near Mortitx and plunged down a ravine of approximately 30 metres. The accident occurred on the MA-10, on the section connecting Pollença and Lluc in Mallorca’s Serra de Tramuntana.

His co-driver, German national Christina Ettel, 39, was seriously injured and taken to hospital with spinal injuries.

The Guardia Civil's investigation remains open, and the precise cause of the crash has not been officially established. Investigators are considering whether the vehicle encountered an irregularity in the road surface before a right-hand bend, potentially contributing to the loss of control if the Porsche was travelling at high speed.

Road Defect and Speed Under Investigation

Reports citing sources close to the investigation identify two possible contributing factors: a defect or uneven section of asphalt before the bend, and the speed at which the car was travelling.

The working hypothesis is that the vehicle may have encountered the road irregularity while approaching the curve, potentially unsettling the car and contributing to its departure from the road.

However, investigators have not publicly confirmed that a pothole caused the crash. Nor has the Porsche's precise speed at the time of the accident been established.

The Guardia Civil's Judicial Police unit in Inca is investigating the circumstances. The possibility of road defects remains under consideration alongside the speed hypothesis, and no final conclusion has been announced.

Reports citing sources close to the investigation have also indicated that weather conditions were not considered a significant factor in the initial hypotheses. This, too, remains part of the developing account rather than a final determination of the cause.

Rader Was Driving the Rally's Opening Car

At the time of the crash, Rader was participating in the Rally 550 Challenge Mallorca in the event's number 000 vehicle, alongside Ettel. The Porsche was serving as the rally's opening car rather than competing for a position in the classification.

Opening cars travel the route ahead of the competing participants, checking the stage and its conditions before the rally cars pass through. Rader and Ettel were travelling on the section between Lluc and Pollença when the crash occurred.

The incident took place on a section of road closed to ordinary traffic for the rally.

The vehicle left the road near a right-hand bend and fell down the ravine, leaving emergency crews to reach the wreck in difficult terrain. Despite attempts to resuscitate Rader, he died at the scene.

Rally 550 Challenge Mallorca Cancelled After the Crash

Following the fatal accident, organisers cancelled the remaining stages of the Rally 550 Challenge Mallorca, bringing the competition to an early end.

The crash has prompted questions about the condition of the road surface and the circumstances in which the opening car was travelling. Those questions will need to be addressed through the ongoing investigation rather than speculation about any single factor.

The available information does not establish whether any road defect was directly responsible, whether the car was travelling above the applicable speed limit, or whether a combination of circumstances led to the accident.

Who Was Klaus Rader?

Rader was best known as a co-founder of L’Osteria, the German restaurant chain established in Nuremberg in 1999. The company became an international business known for its large pizzas and fresh pasta, expanding to locations across several European countries.

He also had a long-standing interest in motorsport, with more than two decades of experience in racing events and high-performance cars.

His death brought condolences from the restaurant group and the wider motorsport community. His wife, Viktoria Rader, subsequently asked for privacy for herself and the family as they grieved.

Investigation Continues

The fatal crash remains under investigation by the Guardia Civil. The central questions include whether the road surface contributed to the Porsche's loss of control, what speed the vehicle was travelling at, and how those factors may have interacted before it left the road.

For now, excessive speed is among the leading investigative hypotheses, while a possible road defect has not been ruled out. Neither has been established as the definitive cause.

The findings of the investigation will be needed to determine the circumstances of the crash that killed Klaus Rader and seriously injured his co-driver during the Mallorca rally.
