Initial Earthquake Alert Between Ibiza and Mallorca Revised by IGN

October 08, 2026

An earthquake initially reported between Ibiza and Mallorca on Wednesday, October 7 was subsequently revised by Spain's National Geographic Institute (IGN), which moved the epicentre towards the Catalan coast and reduced the recorded magnitude.

The initial calculation, issued by the IGN in the morning, indicated a magnitude 3.0 earthquake at around 08:34 local time in the Mediterranean-Balearic area. The provisional data placed the event in the sea between Mallorca and Ibiza.

The information was later reviewed as the IGN's seismic network processed additional data.

IGN Revises the Location and Magnitude

The IGN's updated catalogue now places the earthquake at coordinates 40.8658° N and 1.9724° E, offshore from the Catalan coast.

The revised magnitude is 2.2, compared with the initial provisional estimate of 3.0, while the depth has been updated to 16 kilometres.

The event is now classified by the IGN within the “Costero Catalana” seismic area rather than the Mediterranean-Balearic area.

This means the earthquake was not ultimately confirmed as having occurred between Ibiza and Mallorca.

No Reports of the Earthquake Being Felt in Ibiza

The initial reports did not indicate that the movement had been perceived by the population in Ibiza or Mallorca.

Given the subsequent revision of the epicentre, there is even less basis for describing the event as an earthquake affecting Ibiza directly.

The episode illustrates why preliminary seismic data can change shortly after an earthquake is detected. Initial automatic calculations are subject to revision as the IGN's seismic network analyses the available readings.

What Happened to the Initial Alert?

The first calculation from the IGN indicated a magnitude of 3.0 at 06:34:11 UTC, equivalent to approximately 08:34 local time in Ibiza.

That preliminary calculation placed the event within the broad Mediterranean-Balearic area. The IGN subsequently revised the parameters and removed the initial location between Ibiza and Mallorca from its official data.

The current official record identifies the event as a magnitude 2.2 earthquake in the Costero Catalana area, at a depth of 16 kilometres.

An Important Distinction for Ibiza

For residents and visitors in Ibiza, the key point is that the earthquake was initially associated with the area between Ibiza and Mallorca but was later relocated by the official seismic authority.

The final IGN data therefore does not support reporting this as a magnitude 3.0 earthquake between the two islands.

The event was detected in the western Mediterranean, but its revised epicentre was significantly farther north, off the Catalan coast.

The Final Official Data

According to the latest IGN catalogue:

  • Date: October 7, 2026

  • Time: 08:34 local time

  • Revised magnitude: 2.2

  • Revised depth: 16 kilometres

  • Revised coordinates: 40.8658° N, 1.9724° E

  • Official seismic area: Costero Catalana

  • Initial provisional location: Mediterranean-Balearic area

  • Initial provisional magnitude: 3.0

The revision means that the original description of a magnitude 3.0 earthquake between Ibiza and Mallorca should be treated as an initial, superseded calculation rather than the final official record.
