Ibiza Outdoors and Ibiza and Formentera Preservation Organise Three Charity Walks for Environmental Conservation

06. November 2026

Ibiza's natural environment will take centre stage this November with three charity walks organised by Ibiza Outdoors in collaboration with Ibiza and Formentera Preservation. Taking place on three consecutive Sundays, the initiative will combine outdoor exploration with environmental education, raising funds for conservation projects while introducing participants to some of the island's most important ecological challenges.

The programme includes three different routes between 8 and 22 November 2026, focusing on the protection of Ibiza's native wall lizard, the preservation of traditional agricultural landscapes and the conservation of Mediterranean Posidonia seagrass meadows.

All proceeds will go towards the foundation's environmental conservation projects. Participants can join one, two or all three walks, with contributions made online when booking or on the day of the activity.

8 November: Discover the Pitiusa Wall Lizard in Ses Salines

The first walk will take place on Sunday, 8 November, from 10:00 to 13:00, focusing on the Pitiusa wall lizard (Podarcis pityusensis), locally known as the sargantana.

Endemic to Ibiza and Formentera, this distinctive reptile faces a serious conservation challenge from invasive snakes introduced to the islands, particularly through the importation of olive trees and other plants.

According to Ibiza and Formentera Preservation, healthy populations of the lizard remain in only around 30% of Ibiza. The foundation's Protegim Ses Sargantanes project works to protect the species by supporting conservation measures and controlling invasive snake populations.

During 2025, the project captured 584 snakes, with Ses Salines Natural Park among the areas receiving significant attention.

The protected area extends across southern Ibiza and northern Formentera and is particularly important for its natural habitats, biodiversity and historic salt-producing landscape.

The walk will offer participants an opportunity to discover more about the Pitiusa wall lizard, understand the threats it faces and learn about the conservation work taking place to protect it.

15 November: Explore Ibiza's Agricultural Heritage and Traditional Fruit Trees

The second walk is scheduled for Sunday, 15 November, from 10:00 to 13:00, exploring the rural landscapes of northern Ibiza.

The excursion will focus on traditional fruit trees and the importance of maintaining the island's agricultural heritage.

Through its Eivissa i Formentera Sembren Futur programme, part of the wider Ibiza Produce initiative, the foundation has supported the planting of 1,934 fruit trees across 32 agricultural holdings in Ibiza and Formentera since 2024.

The trees include traditional Mediterranean species such as carob, fig, almond, olive and pomegranate.

The initiative aims to strengthen local agricultural production, encourage more sustainable farming practices and help preserve traditional rural landscapes.

The November walk will introduce participants to this agricultural heritage while explaining why maintaining traditional crops and productive farmland is important for the islands' environmental future.

The programme also reflects the foundation's continued investment in sustainable agriculture. On 29 October 2026, it announced a new €35,000 funding round intended to support the planting of up to another 1,000 fruit trees across Ibiza and Formentera.

22 November: Discover Posidonia Along Ibiza's Northern Coast

The third and final walk will take place on Sunday, 22 November, from 10:00 to 13:00, following Ibiza Outdoors' Crystal Coast route along the island's northern coastline.

This excursion will focus on Posidonia oceanica, the Mediterranean seagrass responsible for supporting some of the region's most valuable marine ecosystems.

Although often mistaken for seaweed, Posidonia is a flowering marine plant that forms extensive underwater meadows. These habitats provide shelter and breeding grounds for marine species, contribute to water clarity and help protect coastal environments against erosion.

The Posidonia meadows surrounding Ibiza and Formentera form part of the natural values recognised within the UNESCO World Heritage property Ibiza, Biodiversity and Culture, inscribed in 1999.

However, these underwater ecosystems face several pressures, including uncontrolled boat anchoring, pollution and rising sea temperatures.

The final excursion will provide an opportunity to explore the northern coastline while learning more about the ecological importance of Posidonia and the need to protect it.

Supporting Conservation Through Outdoor Activities

The three walks bring together two organisations with established connections to Ibiza's outdoor and environmental sectors.

Ibiza Outdoors, formerly known as Walking Ibiza, has been organising outdoor experiences on the island since 2010, including guided walks and activities designed to introduce participants to Ibiza's landscapes.

Ibiza and Formentera Preservation is a non-profit environmental foundation established in 2008. Its work supports projects dedicated to protecting the natural environment, restoring biodiversity and promoting more sustainable practices across the Pityusic Islands.

The collaboration offers participants a practical way to support these initiatives while learning about the environmental challenges affecting Ibiza and Formentera.

Dates, Times and Registration

The charity walks will take place on three consecutive Sundays in November 2026. Each excursion is scheduled from 10:00 to 13:00.

Participation is based on a voluntary donation, which can be made online during the booking process or on the day of the walk. Participants can register for individual excursions or join all three.
