Dalt Vila will take on a very different atmosphere this weekend as Ibiza hosts the ninth edition of Las Noches del Patrimonio on Friday, September 11, and Saturday, September 12.

The programme will bring 15 free cultural activities into Ibiza’s historic walled city, giving residents and visitors opportunities to experience Dalt Vila through live music, theatre, heritage visits, museum activities and contemporary dance.

The event takes place simultaneously across Spain’s 15 cities recognised as World Heritage sites, with more than 500 free cultural activities taking place nationwide.

The Ibiza programme is organised around three strands: Abierto Patrimonio, Vive Patrimonio and Escena Patrimonio.

Three ways to experience Dalt Vila

Abierto Patrimonio focuses on extraordinary opening hours and access to historic and cultural spaces.

Vive Patrimonio brings music, theatre and other artistic activities into the historic centre.

Escena Patrimonio focuses specifically on contemporary dance and artistic creation within heritage settings.

Together, the three strands are designed to encourage people to experience historic centres as living cultural spaces rather than simply monuments to visit during the day.

BENTHOS brings Posidonia to the stage

One of the main highlights in Ibiza will be the premiere of BENTHOS, a contemporary dance work created by choreographer, dancer and researcher Adrián Herrera.

The performance will take place on Saturday, September 12, in the Claustre del Ayuntamiento in Dalt Vila, with two performances at 9:00pm and 10:00pm.

Each performance lasts approximately 20 minutes and admission is free until capacity is reached.

BENTHOS takes Posidonia oceanica as its starting point, using the language of contemporary dance to explore interdependence, fragility, resistance and regeneration within marine ecosystems.

The piece translates processes affecting Posidonia meadows, including balance, degradation and recovery, into physical movement, creating a direct link between Ibiza’s natural heritage and contemporary artistic expression.

The Renaissance history of Dalt Vila comes to life

The programme will also offer visitors an opportunity to experience Dalt Vila through theatrical tours inspired by life inside the walled city during the Renaissance.

Two tours are scheduled: Friday, September 11 at 6:00pm and Saturday, September 12 at 11:00am.

Both begin at the Mercat Vell and do not require advance registration.

The theatrical format is designed to make the history of the fortified city more accessible by recreating aspects of everyday life and taking visitors back to the period when the Renaissance fortifications were still central to the city's defence and development.

A night-time journey along the historic walls

Another guided experience will explore Dalt Vila after dark.

“Una noche en las murallas de Dalt Vila” will recreate the atmosphere of the fortified city at night, focusing on how the walls and defensive systems operated after sunset.

The tour begins at 7:30pm from Portal Nou on both scheduled evenings and requires advance reservation.

The experience offers a different perspective on Dalt Vila, concentrating not only on its architecture but also on the way the fortified city functioned as a protected urban environment once darkness fell.

Rare historic documents go on display

The Arxiu Històric d’Eivissa i Formentera will also open its doors specially on Friday and Saturday.

Visits take place at 8:00pm and will include the opportunity to see at least nine royal letters associated with Alfonso V of Aragon, known as Alfonso V the Magnanimous.

The documents provide a rare opportunity to encounter original historical material connected to Ibiza within the setting of Dalt Vila itself.

Special museum visits offer a closer look at contemporary art

Two of Ibiza’s museums will also participate through special visits to their temporary exhibitions.

On Friday, September 11 at 9:00pm, the Museu Puget will host a guided visit to “I en la mar, els somnis” by Hans Grass.

On Saturday, September 12 at 9:00pm, the Museu d’Art Contemporani d’Eivissa, MACE, will offer a special visit to “Cel d’Or” by Stefan Brüggemann.

Both activities are designed to encourage visitors to engage more closely with the exhibitions through guided interpretation.

Music fills Dalt Vila on Friday night

The Friday programme includes several live music performances in historic spaces.

Santi Pérez and Anikó Pusztai will perform at Es Refectori at 7:00pm.

At 8:30pm, the Ensemble de Saxos will play at the Mirador de la plaza d’Espanya.

The evening will conclude at 10:00pm with a jazz quartet performing in the Claustre del Ayuntamiento.

The programme deliberately places live music inside architectural spaces, making Dalt Vila's historic surroundings part of the experience.

Six heritage spaces stay open later

The Abierto Patrimonio programme will provide another simple way to experience the event.

Six cultural and heritage spaces will extend their opening hours into the evening, with free access.

They include MACE, Museu Puget, the Centre d’Interpretació Madina Yabisa, the Arxiu Històric d’Eivissa i Formentera, the Sala Refectori of Ibiza Town Hall and Es Polvorí.

Several of these locations will remain open until 11:00pm, giving visitors the opportunity to explore exhibitions and historic spaces after normal daytime hours.

Dalt Vila is part of Ibiza’s UNESCO World Heritage site

The setting itself is a major part of the significance of the event.

Dalt Vila and its Renaissance walls form one of the components of the UNESCO World Heritage property “Ibiza, Biodiversity and Culture”.

UNESCO describes the fortified Upper Town as an outstanding example of Renaissance military architecture. The fortifications were developed between 1554 and 1585 by Italian engineers Giovanni Battista Calvi and Jacobo Paleazzo Fratin and later influenced fortification design in Spanish territories in the Americas.

The historic centre also preserves a network of streets and buildings that reflect more than 2,500 years of history on the hill.

That makes the decision to place contemporary dance, live music and theatre inside the walls particularly significant.

A celebration taking place across 15 Spanish World Heritage cities

Ibiza is one of 15 Spanish cities participating in Las Noches del Patrimonio.

The network includes Alcalá de Henares, Ávila, Baeza, Cáceres, Córdoba, Cuenca, Ibiza, Mérida, Salamanca, San Cristóbal de La Laguna, Santiago de Compostela, Segovia, Tarragona, Toledo and Úbeda.

Across those cities, the 2026 edition brings together more than 500 free cultural activities, using historic centres, museums, monuments and public spaces as settings for performances and heritage experiences.

A living approach to heritage

The underlying idea of Las Noches del Patrimonio is to make historic centres active cultural spaces.

That means heritage is not presented only through architecture, museums or monuments. Music, dance, theatre, guided experiences and contemporary artistic work are brought into those environments to create a more dynamic relationship between the public and historic places.

The format is particularly suited to Dalt Vila, where Renaissance architecture, museums, archaeological layers and contemporary cultural activity can exist within the same compact area.

Free access makes the programme widely accessible

All 15 activities in Ibiza's programme are free.

Some activities, including the wall tours and certain guided experiences, require advance reservation or are subject to limited capacity, while others are available without prior registration.

BENTHOS, for example, is free until the venue reaches capacity, while the theatrical Dalt Vila tours do not require registration.

That combination makes it possible to build an evening around several different activities without the cost usually associated with organised cultural experiences.

Two nights to rediscover Dalt Vila

On September 11 and 12, Dalt Vila will become one of Ibiza’s main cultural stages.

Visitors will be able to move between historic documents, museums, theatrical tours, live music and contemporary dance while exploring one of the most important heritage sites in the Balearic Islands.

The highlight, BENTHOS, adds a particularly modern dimension by using Posidonia as the inspiration for a contemporary dance work, creating a direct connection between Ibiza's natural environment and its cultural life.

Las Noches del Patrimonio offers 15 free activities across two evenings in Ibiza’s historic centre.

From Renaissance stories and historic letters to jazz, saxophones, museum exhibitions and a contemporary dance premiere inspired by Posidonia, the programme presents Dalt Vila from a variety of perspectives.

For two nights, the walled city will not simply be a monument to admire.
