One month has now passed since Antonio Escandell Torres, an 85-year-old resident of Sant Joan known locally as Toni “Taronges”, was last seen in Ibiza.
Despite an extensive search operation involving the Guardia Civil, firefighters, Protección Civil, police, volunteers and local residents, there is still no confirmed information about his whereabouts.
The search remains active, with the Guardia Civil now intensifying its efforts around wells, cisterns and other difficult-to-access areas in Sant Joan.
Specialist Guardia Civil Units Join the Search
As the search enters its second month, two specialist Guardia Civil units have been brought into the operation.
The GREIM, the Guardia Civil's Mountain Rescue and Intervention Group, is assisting with searches across rugged and difficult terrain.
The GEAS, the Special Group for Underwater Activities, is concentrating particularly on the inspection of wells and other water-related locations.
Teams have been checking wells, cavities and cisterns around the Camí d’en Vidal and surrounding areas as investigators continue to explore every possible location.
An Extensive Search Across Sant Joan
The search for Toni has already covered a large area of northern Ibiza.
Teams have searched locations including Camí de Cas Vidals, the area around Can Taronges, the road to Benirràs, the serra d’en Lluquí Sanç, the vénda de Cas Cavallers, ses Arcades and the pou de Labritja, among many other areas.
The operation has involved the Guardia Civil, Ibiza firefighters and their canine unit, the Local Police of Sant Joan and Protección Civil.
A Guardia Civil helicopter and drones have also been used during the search.
Specialist Dogs Also Searched for Clues
Earlier in August, specialist search dogs were brought to Ibiza from Madrid to reinforce the operation.
The GEAS canine unit spent three days working in the area, but did not locate any significant indication of Toni's whereabouts.
Local volunteers have also continued searching independently, with residents and people familiar with the island's countryside helping authorities identify paths, ravines and difficult-to-reach areas that might otherwise be overlooked.
More than 40 local hunters previously joined the search, using their knowledge of the area's countryside and mountain terrain to help explore additional locations.
Toni Has Been Missing Since July 31
Antonio Escandell Torres was last seen on the afternoon of Friday, July 31, in the Sant Joan area.
He is 85 years old and has Alzheimer's disease and senile dementia, as well as hearing difficulties that can make it difficult for him to respond if someone calls out to him.
The disappearance prompted an immediate search operation, which has continued for four weeks despite the intense summer heat.
For those involved, the absence of any clear clue has made the search particularly difficult.
The Search Continues
One month after his disappearance, authorities have still not found a confirmed indication of where Toni may have gone.
The Guardia Civil continues to coordinate the operation, with firefighters, Protección Civil, police, specialist units and volunteers contributing to the search.
Authorities are also urging people not to spread unverified information or rumours on social media, after false or unconfirmed reports circulated during the early stages of the disappearance.
