Ibiza’s Rainbow Lizards Are Disappearing — and Scientists Are Racing to Save Them

Some of Ibiza’s most recognisable wildlife could be facing a race against time.

The island’s strikingly colourful Ibiza wall lizard, known locally as the sargantana, is being pushed towards extinction by an invasive predator that has spread rapidly across the island.

Scientists are now racing to document the remaining populations before they disappear, particularly on the small rocky islets surrounding Ibiza where some of the last unique populations survive.

One of Ibiza’s Most Unique Animals

The Ibiza wall lizard (Podarcis pityusensis) is not an ordinary lizard.

Across Ibiza, Formentera and the surrounding islets, isolated populations have developed an extraordinary range of colours, including bright greens and blues, copper, orange and almost black.

Scientists have identified more than two dozen distinct colour forms, making the species exceptionally unusual from an evolutionary perspective.

The different populations developed over long periods of isolation on Ibiza and its smaller neighbouring islands, creating a remarkable example of island evolution.

For generations, these colourful lizards have also become part of Ibiza's identity. Their image appears on souvenirs, clothing and other products associated with the island.

But increasingly, scientists are worried that some of the lizards themselves could disappear.

The Snake That Changed Ibiza’s Ecosystem

The main threat is the horseshoe whip snake (Hemorrhois hippocrepis), a non-venomous snake native to parts of mainland Spain.

The species began appearing in Ibiza around two decades ago.

Researchers believe the snakes were unintentionally introduced through the importation of large ornamental olive trees from mainland Spain. The hollow trunks and roots of old trees provided shelter for snakes and their eggs, allowing them to reach the island.

Once established, the snakes spread rapidly.

Today, they occupy around 90% of Ibiza, according to researchers, and they have also reached Formentera and several offshore islets.

The Lizards Are Their Main Target

The problem is particularly severe because the Ibiza wall lizard makes up a major part of the invasive snake's diet.

Researchers say the lizard represents more than half of the snake's diet in its invasive range on Ibiza.

That intense predation has already caused dramatic declines in lizard populations.

And scientists say the situation is getting worse faster than previously expected.

The Disappearance Can Happen Shockingly Fast

One of the most concerning findings from recent research is how quickly lizard populations can collapse after snakes arrive.

On the islet of Santa Eulària, researchers recorded 72 Ibiza wall lizards along specific survey routes in 2016.

By 2023, just three were recorded.

By 2025, researchers could no longer find any.

Scientists have also documented the disappearance of the lizard from around 10 islets, demonstrating how even relatively small snake populations can have devastating consequences on isolated lizard colonies.

A new 2026 study published in Ecology found that the time between the arrival of invasive snakes and the local disappearance of lizards has become dramatically shorter — falling from more than a decade in earlier observations to roughly three years in more recent cases.

The Snakes Can Even Swim Between Islands

One of the most alarming discoveries has been that the Mediterranean is not necessarily providing the protection researchers once hoped for.

In April 2024, researchers obtained evidence of a horseshoe whip snake swimming from Ibiza towards the nearby Santa Eulària islet, around 450 metres offshore.

The observation confirmed concerns that the snakes can use the sea to reach isolated populations that had previously been considered relatively protected.

For conservationists, this changes the picture dramatically.

Even populations living on small rocky islands are not necessarily safe.

Why Losing the Lizards Matters

The Ibiza wall lizard is important far beyond its visual appeal.

It is considered a keystone species within the local ecosystem.

The lizards help control insect populations, including agricultural pests, while also contributing to pollination and seed dispersal.

If they disappear, researchers warn that the ecological consequences could extend beyond the loss of one distinctive reptile.

That makes the issue much bigger than simply protecting an animal that tourists happen to recognise.

It is about maintaining the balance of Ibiza's native ecosystem.

Thousands of Snakes Have Already Been Removed

Authorities and conservation organisations have not ignored the problem.

Intensive snake-control programmes have been operating for years.

According to researchers, more than 12,000 invasive snakes had been culled since 2016, with thousands more captured in recent operations.

A separate conservation programme, Protegim Ses Sargantanes, has also been working to protect the island's native lizards. The project reported capturing more than 500 invasive snakes during 2025 alone.

But despite these efforts, the invasive snakes continue to expand.

Researchers estimate that the species could eventually occupy the entire main island.

Scientists Are Racing to Record What Remains

That is why researchers are now placing increasing emphasis on documenting the surviving lizard populations.

The extraordinary variety of colours and forms found across Ibiza and its surrounding islets represents an evolutionary record that cannot simply be recreated once a population disappears.

Scientists want to identify which populations remain, understand their genetic and ecological differences and determine which locations might still offer the best chance of protecting them.

For some isolated populations, however, the window of opportunity may already be very small.

A Race Against Time for Ibiza’s Sargantanas

The story of Ibiza's wall lizards is an unusual example of how human activity can unintentionally transform an island ecosystem.

The snakes were not deliberately introduced as predators.

They arrived hidden among ornamental trees, established themselves and found an environment where their natural prey had evolved without having to deal with this particular threat.

The result has been devastating.

The Ibiza wall lizard evolved over thousands of years into a collection of unique island populations, each shaped by its own isolated environment.

Now, in just a few decades, some of those populations have disappeared.

And scientists fear more could follow.

For visitors, the colourful sargantana may simply be one of the little lizards seen running across rocks, walls and gardens around Ibiza.

But it represents something much bigger: a unique piece of Ibiza's natural history that may not be here forever.
