Around 5,000 Italian citizens are registered as residents of Ibiza and Formentera, according to the islands' Honorary Vice-Consul Rossana Alvaro, as Italy strengthens its consular presence in the Pitiusas.

The figure was highlighted during the formal inauguration of Italy's Honorary Vice-Consulate in Ibiza on Friday, September 18, attended by Italian Ambassador to Spain Giuseppe Buccino Grimaldi.

The office had already reopened in May after a period without a local vice-consular service.

A Local Point of Contact for Italian Citizens

The Honorary Vice-Consulate serves Italian citizens in Ibiza and Formentera and provides consular assistance within the responsibilities assigned to the honorary office.

The Italian Consulate General in Barcelona lists Rossana Alvaro as Honorary Vice-Consul, with jurisdiction covering both islands.

The office is located on Paseo Vara del Rey in Ibiza Town and operates by appointment.

Around 5,000 Italians Registered With AIRE

Alvaro said approximately 5,000 Italians are currently registered with AIRE, Italy's official registry of citizens living abroad.

She also noted that the number of Italian nationals present in Ibiza and Formentera increases significantly during the summer, when the islands receive large numbers of Italian visitors.

The AIRE figure therefore refers to registered Italian citizens living abroad and should not be understood as a fixed count of every Italian national present on the islands throughout the year.

Formal Inauguration Took Place in September

The vice-consulate officially reopened on May 18, 2026, allowing Italian citizens living in Ibiza and Formentera to request passports and access other services falling within the office's assigned responsibilities.

The September 18 ceremony formally inaugurated the premises and was attended by Ambassador Giuseppe Buccino Grimaldi and other Italian and local representatives.

The ambassador's visit formed part of a wider programme across the Balearic Islands between September 16 and 18.

The Ambassador Highlights the Italian Presence

Buccino Grimaldi said the Italian community has become an established part of the Balearic Islands' social and economic life.

According to information released during his institutional visit, more than 25,000 Italian citizens are permanent residents across the Balearics, with the community having grown by around 35% over the previous two years.

The diplomatic statement identified catering and tourism, real estate, construction, the nautical sector, fashion, design, retail, events and music among the main areas in which Italian businesses and professionals operate.

Italian Businesses Across the Islands

The Italian presence in the Balearics extends beyond tourism and restaurants.

Italian companies and professionals are active in a range of sectors, while large Italian shipping groups including Grimaldi, MSC and Costa Cruises also operate in the region.

The yachting sector includes Sanlorenzo, which has a commercial office in Portals in Mallorca.

Consular Needs Are Mainly Administrative

The Italian ambassador said many of the most common needs of Italian citizens in Ibiza are administrative.

These include passport procedures, documentation, lost or renewed documents and general guidance.

The vice-consulate can also provide assistance in emergency situations, including cases involving lost documentation needed for travel or the death of an Italian citizen.

More complex consular matters remain under the authority of the competent Italian Consulate General in Barcelona.

Support During Emergencies

Local consular representation can also be important for Italian citizens who encounter difficulties while living in or visiting the islands.

The vice-consulate's responsibilities include first assistance and coordination within its assigned functions, while working with the Italian diplomatic and consular network.

The official Italian consular network describes honorary consular offices as providing proximity services and first assistance to citizens who are located away from the main consular headquarters.

Connecting Italy With Ibiza

The role of the vice-consulate extends beyond administrative services.

Alvaro has also highlighted the importance of encouraging stronger economic and professional links between the Italian and Spanish communities in Ibiza.

Three Italian Consular Offices Now Operate in the Balearics

The reopening of the Ibiza office forms part of a broader strengthening of Italy's consular network in the Balearic Islands.

The Italian diplomatic mission now lists an honorary consulate in Palma, an honorary vice-consulate in Ibiza and an honorary vice-consulate in Menorca.

The three offices provide local services while remaining connected to the Italian Consulate General in Barcelona.
