Balearic Islands Welcome 11.76 Million International Tourists Through August, Up 2%

October 02, 2026

The Balearic Islands received almost 11.8 million international tourists between January and August 2026, with visitor numbers continuing to rise compared with the same period last year.

According to the latest figures from Spain's National Statistics Institute (INE), the islands welcomed 11,760,942 international tourists during the first eight months of the year, an increase of 2.0% compared with January to August 2025.

The figures come from the INE's FRONTUR survey of tourist movements at borders and were published on 2 October 2026.

August Brings 2.6 Million International Tourists

August remained one of the busiest months of the season, with 2,596,458 international tourists visiting the Balearic Islands.

That represents a 2.6% increase compared with August 2025.

The Balearics were also Spain's leading destination by principal destination share in August, accounting for 21.2% of all international tourists recorded in the country during the month.

Catalonia followed with 19.4%, while Andalusia accounted for 16.8%.

Balearics Rank Second for Cumulative International Arrivals

Looking at the first eight months of 2026, the Balearic Islands ranked second among Spain's autonomous communities for international tourist arrivals.

Catalonia received 14,323,450 international tourists between January and August, an increase of 3.9%.

The Balearic Islands followed with 11,760,942, up 2.0%, while Andalusia recorded 11,084,168 international tourists, an increase of 10.4%.

This distinction is important because the 11.084 million figure appearing in the original report refers to Andalusia, not the Balearic Islands.

Tourism Spending Also Rises

International tourist spending in the Balearic Islands remained strong during August.

Visitors spent €4.065 billion in the islands during the month, an increase of 4.2% compared with August 2025.

The figure represented 22.8% of all international tourist spending recorded across Spain during August, giving the Balearics the largest share among the country's autonomous communities.

Average spending per international tourist in the islands was €1,566, while average daily spending reached €243. The average trip lasted 6.4 days.

The Islands' Share of Spending Through August

Across the first eight months of 2026, the Balearic Islands accounted for 16.4% of Spain's total international tourist spending.

Catalonia represented 18.9%, while the Canary Islands also accounted for 16.4%.

The INE recorded €99.892 billion in international tourist spending across Spain during January-August, an increase of 8.0% compared with the same period of 2025.

Spain Records More Than 70 Million International Tourists

The latest figures also show continued growth in international tourism across Spain as a whole.

Almost 70.4 million international tourists visited Spain during the first eight months of 2026, representing an increase of 5.4% compared with the same period in 2025.

August alone saw 12,256,087 international tourists arrive in Spain, up 9.2% year on year.

What the Figures Mean for Ibiza

For Ibiza, the figures provide another indication of the continued strength of international tourism across the Balearic Islands during the 2026 season.

However, the regional figures should not be interpreted as an Ibiza-specific visitor count. FRONTUR's autonomous-community figures refer to the tourist's principal destination and cover the Balearic Islands as a whole.

Separate island-level statistics are therefore needed to establish precisely how many of these visitors travelled to Ibiza.

Figures Remain Provisional

The latest FRONTUR and EGATUR figures are provisional.

The INE states that the data published on 2 October 2026 will be revised in March 2027, meaning the current totals and growth rates may change when the final data are released.

For now, the figures show that the Balearic Islands received 11.76 million international tourists during the first eight months of 2026, with arrivals up 2% compared with the same period last year.
