Ibiza has found itself at the centre of an unusual viral debate this summer, with holidaymakers and social media users claiming that foul smells are becoming increasingly noticeable in the island’s clubs, beach bars and pool parties.
The bizarre story was reported by Tyla after several TikTok users began describing what they called an “Ibiza fart pandemic”, with some saying they repeatedly encountered strong smells while partying on the island.
Why Does Ibiza Smell So Bad?
Several theories have emerged online about what could be behind the complaints.
Some holidaymakers have blamed drains or sanitation, while others have pointed towards the combination of long nights, alcohol, dehydration and holiday diets.
Fitness-focused visitors have also entered the discussion, with high-protein diets and supplements suggested as possible contributors to increased digestive problems.
Another theory circulating on TikTok links the alleged increase to weight-loss medications and peptides.
However, there is currently no evidence proving that Ibiza is experiencing an island-wide “fart pandemic” or that one particular cause is responsible.
What Do Doctors Say?
Tyla spoke to GPs Dr Andrew Mabey and Dr Andy Muress about the claims.
The doctors suggested that a combination of factors could potentially contribute to digestive symptoms, including changes in diet, alcohol consumption, dehydration, long nights and certain medications.
They specifically discussed GLP-1 medications and experimental weight-loss peptides, explaining that medications affecting digestion can cause gastrointestinal side effects such as bloating and increased gas in some people.
However, their comments do not establish that these medications are responsible for the smells being reported by Ibiza visitors.
They also warned against using unregulated, research-only peptides and emphasised that prescription weight-loss medications should only be used appropriately.
The Mystery Has Taken Over TikTok
The story has largely been driven by social media rather than official health or environmental data.
Several TikTok creators have posted videos describing unpleasant smells during nights out in Ibiza, with some claiming they encountered the smell repeatedly at different venues.
Tyla also spoke to holidaymakers who said they had noticed unusual odours during their trips, including one visitor who described repeatedly encountering a strong smell around the island.
The reports have since turned an otherwise ordinary holiday complaint into one of Ibiza's more unexpected viral stories of summer 2026.
Is There Actually a “Fart Pandemic”?
Probably not — at least not based on the evidence currently available.
The phrase is essentially a viral social-media description, rather than a medically recognised condition or an officially documented Ibiza-wide problem.
The doctors consulted by Tyla suggested that multiple everyday factors could potentially contribute to unpleasant smells or digestive symptoms, but there is no confirmed single explanation.
So for now, the “Ibiza fart pandemic” remains more of an internet phenomenon than an established health story.
Still, if you're heading to Ibiza this summer, there is one piece of advice that probably doesn't need much scientific investigation: stay hydrated, look after your stomach — and maybe give the person dancing next to you a little space.
