End of an Era: Chiringay Closes After 45 Years on Ibiza’s Es Cavallet Beach
One of Ibiza’s most iconic beach venues has announced its closure. Chiringay, the legendary beachfront restaurant and social gathering place on Es Cavallet Beach, has officially said goodbye after 45 years, marking the end of a chapter that helped shape the island’s modern cultural identity.
The announcement was made through the venue’s official Instagram account, where the Chiringay family shared an emotional farewell message celebrating decades of memories, friendships, and unforgettable summers.
"After 45 years of love, laughter and summers, the time has come to say goodbye," the team wrote.
For generations of visitors, Chiringay was much more than a beach restaurant. Located within the protected natural surroundings of the Ses Salines Natural Park, it became one of the most important social hubs for Ibiza’s LGBTQ+ community and played a key role in establishing Es Cavallet as one of Europe’s most recognized LGBTQ+-friendly beaches.
Signed by Alberto and the entire Chiringay family, the farewell message thanked the countless guests who returned year after year and helped transform the venue into a symbol of freedom, diversity, and inclusion.
"For 45 years we have shared laughter, hugs and memories we will never forget. Thank you for making our home your home."
Photographs spanning decades of Chiringay’s history accompanied the announcement, showcasing the people, celebrations, and community spirit that made the venue a beloved institution on the island. One image simply stated:
"Chiringay will always be part of Ibiza’s history."
More Than a Beach Restaurant
Since opening in the early 1980s, Chiringay became a landmark destination for both locals and international visitors. Its relaxed atmosphere, beachfront setting, and welcoming environment turned it into one of Ibiza’s most recognizable summer meeting points.
Over the years, the venue witnessed the transformation of Ibiza from a small Mediterranean island into a world-famous tourism destination. Through changing trends and generations of visitors, Chiringay remained a constant presence on the sands of Es Cavallet.
Environmental and Legal Challenges
The closure comes after years of uncertainty surrounding beach businesses operating within the Ses Salines Natural Park. Since 2007, coastal restoration plans have aimed to protect and restore dune systems while reducing the environmental impact of commercial structures located within Spain’s public maritime-terrestrial domain. These proposals created ongoing challenges for several establishments operating on Es Cavallet and Ses Salines beaches.
More recently, reports emerged that renovation works at Chiringay were halted following inspections involving environmental authorities, SEPRONA officers, and municipal planning officials. According to local reports, inspectors alleged that extensive works were being carried out without the required permits within the protected natural area.
A Lasting Legacy
Despite the legal and environmental debates that surrounded its final years, Chiringay’s legacy extends far beyond regulations and permits.
For many people, it represented the open-minded, welcoming spirit that helped define Ibiza’s global reputation. It was a place where friendships were formed, celebrations were shared, and visitors from around the world felt at home.
As the Chiringay family closes the doors for the final time, they leave behind 45 years of memories on one of Ibiza’s most beautiful beaches and an enduring place in the island’s history.
An era has ended at Es Cavallet, but for thousands who spent summers there, Chiringay will always remain part of the Ibiza story.
