Spain’s 2026 Total Solar Eclipse Could Generate €360 Million in Just One Week, with Ibiza Set for a Once-in-a-Lifetime Sunset Moment
Spain’s 2026 solar eclipse could generate more than €360 million in one week, with Ibiza set to share in the spotlight
Spain is preparing for one of the most anticipated astronomical events of the decade, and new research suggests the impact could go far beyond the sky.
According to a report by Afi, Analistas Financieros Internacionales, the total solar eclipse on 12 August 2026 could generate around €362 million in tourism spending in less than a week, driven largely by travellers staying in short-term rentals across rural areas within the eclipse path.
The same study estimates that the 2026 eclipse could contribute around €421 million in gross value added to the Spanish economy, support 7,300 full-time equivalent jobs, and generate €146 million in additional tax revenue.
The phenomenon forms part of the so-called “Iberian Trio”, a rare sequence of solar eclipses crossing Spain in 2026, 2027, and 2028. Across the three events, projected tourism spending could exceed €1.3 billion, with more than one million additional visitors expected to travel to rural municipalities connected to the eclipse routes.
The regions expected to see the strongest economic boost include the Valencian Community, Madrid, Castile and León, and Aragón, with the report highlighting the role of international tourism and short-term rentals in areas where traditional hotel capacity is limited.
But for Ibiza, the eclipse carries a different kind of magic.
The island lies within the path of totality for the 12 August 2026 eclipse, meaning residents and visitors will be able to witness the sun briefly disappear just before sunset. With the eclipse taking place in the evening over the Mediterranean, Ibiza is already being talked about as one of Europe’s most atmospheric places to experience the event.
For the island, this could add a new layer to the peak summer season. Beyond beaches, nightlife, villas, and sunset rituals, August 2026 may bring a wave of travellers coming specifically for a once-in-a-lifetime sky event.
As Spain looks to position itself as a leading astrotourism destination, Ibiza could become one of the most unforgettable viewing points of the entire eclipse route, where science, travel, nature, and sunset culture meet in one extraordinary moment.
