Spanish authorities have dismantled one of the largest criminal networks involved in maritime migrant smuggling across the western Mediterranean, with six people arrested in Ibiza as part of a coordinated international operation.

The investigation, led by Spain's National Police and Guardia Civil with support from Europol and law enforcement agencies in France, Portugal, and Poland, resulted in the arrest of 78 suspects. Authorities confirmed that 27 individuals have been remanded in custody, including several alleged leaders of the organisation.

Operation Targeted a Large International Criminal Network

According to investigators, the organisation operated high-speed boats between Algeria and Spain, allegedly transporting drugs from Spain to North Africa before using the return journeys to smuggle migrants to the Spanish coastline, including Ibiza, as well as Almería, Murcia, Cartagena, and Alicante.

Authorities believe the network was responsible for at least 64 maritime crossings, facilitating the irregular arrival of more than 2,000 migrants while generating estimated illegal profits exceeding €24 million.

Six Arrests Made in Ibiza

Among the 78 arrests carried out during the operation, six took place in Ibiza. Investigators say the island formed part of the network's operational routes across the western Mediterranean.

During the investigation, police seized 18 high-speed boats valued at more than €5 million, along with cash, drugs, firearms, vehicles, satellite communications equipment, fuel, and other specialist equipment allegedly used by the organisation. Authorities also froze bank accounts and other assets linked to several suspected leaders.

Dangerous Sea Crossings

Investigators said migrants were transported in overcrowded speedboats, often travelling at high speeds and without life jackets or adequate safety equipment. In some cases, authorities allege passengers were restrained to reduce the risk of falling overboard during the crossings. Many migrants were reportedly housed in overcrowded and unsanitary accommodation before departing for Spain.

Police also allege the organisation maintained strict internal control through intimidation, threats, and violence while operating across multiple countries. The investigation remains ongoing.
