A stolen luxury yacht worth more than €1 million led Spanish authorities on a dramatic high-speed pursuit off Ibiza after the vessel was allegedly taken from Port de Sóller in Mallorca.
The chase unfolded on Sunday, August 23, after the charter company reported the yacht missing and helped authorities track its location. The vessel was eventually located in waters near Tagomago, off the coast of Ibiza.
Yacht Stolen From Mallorca
The incident began when the yacht disappeared from the harbour at Sóller, Mallorca.
The charter company alerted emergency services and was able to provide tracking information that helped the authorities follow the vessel's movements. A 52-year-old man and a woman were reportedly on board.
The yacht was valued at approximately €1 million, making it a substantial target and prompting a coordinated response from Spain's Civil Guard.
Police Followed the Yacht to Ibiza
A Civil Guard helicopter from the Air Service and vessels from the Provincial Maritime Service were deployed to intercept the yacht.
Authorities eventually located it near Tagomago, the small island northeast of Ibiza that is surrounded by some of the busiest recreational waters in the Pityusic Islands.
Once officers identified the vessel, they repeatedly ordered the person at the helm to stop.
According to reports, those instructions were ignored, triggering a pursuit across the sea.
A 30-Minute Chase at Sea
The pursuit reportedly lasted around 30 minutes.
During the chase, the skipper allegedly carried out a series of dangerous manoeuvres and attempted to ram the Civil Guard patrol boats that were trying to stop the yacht.
The situation eventually came under control when the skipper stopped his actions and officers were able to intercept the vessel.
The 52-year-old man, described in reports as being from Eastern Europe, was arrested.
He is suspected of offences including vessel theft, assaulting a law-enforcement officer and disobedience, although the allegations remain subject to the investigation.
Why Ibiza Became the Scene of the Pursuit
The yacht was not originally stolen from Ibiza.
Instead, authorities tracked it from Mallorca toward the waters around Ibiza, where the pursuit ultimately took place.
The incident highlights the challenges faced by maritime authorities during Ibiza's busy summer season, when thousands of private boats, charter yachts and other vessels move through the waters surrounding the island.
The waters around Tagomago are also relatively close to Ibiza's northeastern coastline, making the area an important part of the island's maritime traffic network.
