Can Misses Hospital Installs 140 Metres of Safety Glass After Fatal Fall in Ibiza

October 22, 2026

Hospital Can Misses in Ibiza has installed 140 metres of protective glass around the Emergency Department area where a patient died after falling into the hospital car park in December 2025. The new installation raises the height of the protective barrier to 2.30 metres and is intended to strengthen safety in the area.

According to the Ibiza and Formentera Health Area, the work comprises 80 safety-glass panels installed above an existing low wall. The permanent installation was completed at the end of September 2026, following a period during which a temporary enclosure protected the area.

A 2.30-Metre Barrier Around the Emergency Area

The installation covers 140 linear metres and consists of 80 panels, each measuring 1.30 metres in height. Positioned on top of an existing wall measuring one metre, the panels bring the total height of the protective barrier to 2.30 metres.

The Health Area said the chosen solution uses 10+10 safety glass. Each panel consists of two tempered-glass layers, each 10 millimetres thick, joined by a four-millimetre interlayer.

The project was designed by an architect, and several possible solutions were assessed before the final option was selected. Resistance tests were also carried out to check the strength of the installation.

The work is intended to reinforce protection along the exposed edge of the Emergency Department area overlooking the hospital car park.

Permanent Protection Replaces Temporary Enclosure

Following the fatal incident in December 2025, a temporary enclosure was installed to protect the area while a permanent solution was developed.

The glass panels were manufactured during July and August 2026. Installation began in early September and was completed towards the end of that month.

The completed barrier is designed to provide a more substantial physical separation between the Emergency Department area and the drop towards the car park.

The Health Area has presented the installation as a safety improvement intended to reduce the risk of another accident of this kind.

Fatal Fall in December 2025

The work follows the death of a patient who fell from the wall near the Emergency Department into the hospital car park in December 2025.

The incident prompted questions about safety arrangements in the area. In reporting published shortly after the death, Emergency Department supervisor Mercedes Pérez said the patient had been sitting on the wall and described its height as insufficient. She also said healthcare staff had previously raised concerns about the feature with hospital management during meetings.

Pérez further explained that staff cannot prevent a patient from leaving the hospital area voluntarily unless the relevant legal conditions, including a court order where required, permit such a restriction.

Those comments reflect concerns raised by a member of staff at the time. They should be distinguished from any formal finding of responsibility for the death.

Safety Improvements at Can Misses

The new glass barrier completes a physical protection measure at the location of the fatal fall. Its installation increases the height of the existing barrier and provides a continuous line of protective glazing along the affected area.

The Health Area has confirmed that resistance testing was carried out before the installation was considered complete.

The intervention addresses the physical protection of this specific location. The information published about the project does not establish a broader finding of negligence or determine whether any individual or institution bears legal responsibility for the 2025 death.
