Juanjo Ferrer to Stand Again for the Senate in Ibiza with Progressive Coalition

October 16, 2026

The Eivissa al Senat alliance has renewed its agreement for Spain’s 29 November general election, with Ferrer returning as its candidate for Ibiza as Formentera prepares to elect its own senator.

Former senator Juanjo Ferrer will once again lead the progressive coalition’s candidacy for the Senate in Ibiza in Spain’s general election on 29 November 2026.

The alliance, known as Eivissa al Senat, was presented on Thursday, 15 October, at Passeig de Vara de Rey in Ibiza Town. It brings together the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE), Esquerra Unida, Moviment Sumar and Ara Eivissa, with support from Podemos.

The agreement renews the united progressive candidacy that secured representation in the Senate in the previous general election. This time, however, Ferrer will stand exclusively for Ibiza, following the constitutional reform that gives Formentera its own senator.

Ferrer thanked the participating parties and independent supporters for their confidence in him, describing the upcoming election as an important moment for the future of social rights.

Housing and Island Representation Among Ferrer’s Priorities

Ferrer has said he intends to continue defending Ibiza’s interests, institutions, culture and language in the Senate, with particular attention to the island’s housing crisis.

He also warned that a possible rise of the far right could threaten social rights achieved over recent decades. These comments reflect the candidate’s political position and the coalition’s campaign message.

The alliance argues that a united candidacy gives progressive voters a clearer option in an election where the balance of representation in the Senate could have significant consequences for national policy.

PSOE, Esquerra Unida, Sumar and Ara Eivissa Renew Their Agreement

Representatives of the four parties attended the presentation and expressed their support for Ferrer.

Socialist representative Pilar Costa welcomed the renewed agreement and praised Ferrer’s work during the previous parliamentary term. David Álvarez of Esquerra Unida, Itziar Zameza of Moviment Sumar and Josep Antoni Prats of Ara Eivissa also backed the alliance.

The parties presented the agreement as an example of cooperation between progressive forces, arguing that a common candidacy can improve their chances of securing representation.

The arrangement follows the united formula used in the 2023 election, although the new electoral map means Ibiza and Formentera will now compete separately for their respective Senate seats.

Podemos Supports the Agreement but Was Absent from the Presentation

Podemos was not represented at the public presentation. However, Ferrer said the party supports the agreement, as it did in 2023, and is completing its own internal process.

According to the statements made at the presentation, Podemos does not plan to field a separate Senate candidate in Ibiza. The coalition remains open to its participation in the agreement.

The substitute candidate for Eivissa al Senat is expected to be announced once the candidacies have been finalised, with 26 October given as the anticipated date.

Why the Senate Matters for Ibiza

The Senate plays a role in national legislation and in certain procedures concerning constitutional institutions. Its composition can influence the passage of legislation and decisions requiring approval by the upper chamber.

For the coalition, maintaining progressive representation is particularly important for issues affecting the Balearic Islands, including housing, island-specific needs and public services.

With the election scheduled for 29 November, Eivissa al Senat is seeking to retain the seat won by the united progressive candidacy in 2023. Ferrer’s return gives the alliance a familiar candidate as it prepares to campaign under the new arrangement, with Ibiza and Formentera each electing their own senator.
